A very clear book :)

This is a fine book from an author who collaborated with other writers to make a book that clearly explains the common diseases that disturb the human body and its organ systems.
What makes this book so good is that before the book discusses about the various diseases that affect the organ systems of the body, you get a preceding chapter that explains the physiology of that organ system when homeostatically normal. This allows the student a quick review and allows the student to compare the behavior of the organ system's state when it is healthy to when it is altered by disease. Additionally, this book comes with an excellent studyguide to help the student focus on what is important about the various diseases, syndromes and conditons that can make the body unhealthy. The CD that comes with this book is a great educational tool as well. The writers and the publishers of this book did a very fine job of making sure all the tools are in place to help the student appreciate and understand pathophysiology and its importance in the health field.
This book also has good color pictures of how various diseases look and flow charts of how the disease progresses or manifests.
The only problem with this book(a minor problem) is that some diseases are not discussed deeply enough. I think that since this is a pathophysiology book, it should go more indepth with the common diseases. An example is the disease glacoma. I'm not sure if it covers glacoma but if it did, it did not cover the signs and symptoms of it enough. It needs to focus on the mechanism of the disease on a cellular level as well as on an organ level. There are some diseases in which the signs, symptoms and diagnosis is well portrayed but the mechnisms are not. Also it needs to focus less on the treatment of the disease and more on the diagnosis IMHO, however that is disputable becuae that is just my opinion.
Overall this is a fine book. I guess in time this book will have some new improvement when the new editions come out. Good book.

Good for nurses or for any interested layperson

This book gives you a good introduction to pathophysiology without being very technical. Even if you are not a medical professional, you will still grasp the concepts because the author gives simple but adequate definition of the disease and its underlying causes. I am a career switcher (switched to RN) and this book worked for me.

Excellent Book

Extremely well written, well edited. Also includes the basic physiology so don't feel intimidated if you're not fresh on that. Well organized. Covers all aspects, such as normal versus "abnormal", pathogenesis, sequelae, pharmacology, etc. In short, it's very complete. Yet very readable. Of all my nursing and biology books, this is one of my favorites.

Kautilya and Vishnugupta, the names by which the ancient Indian political treatise called the Artha stra identifies its author, are traditionally identified with Chanakya.Chanakya has been considered as the pioneer of the field of economics and political science. In the Western world, he has been referred to as The Indian Machiavelli, although Chanakya's works predate Machiavelli's by about 1,800 years. Chanakya was a teacher in Tak a ila, an ancient centre of learning, and was responsible for the creation of Mauryan empire, the first of its kind on the Indian subcontinent. He sees it as a useful appliance, but also a method of corporate control; our feeling of agency is unreal. Instead, it turns us into tools of manipulation and means of wealth accumulation for the elite. The Internet is not something we consume. Instead, we are "sharecroppers"; means of production providing things to be harvested for the enrichment of elites. Rather than consumers, we are the ones consumed; our attention, our illusion of choice, and any delusion of seeing objective representations of the real world. In the past, purveyors of information relied on parochialism to narrow our view of the world. Current internet moguls rely on the illusion of a global view to enhance a parochial view. The wider angle only funnels us into cramped corridors that shuffle us closer to retailers. Instead of a wide angled view of the world, the Internet is a convex two-way mirror. Objects appear larger to us while we are made smaller and more easily captured by those on the other side peering at us. Thus, we are delivered on a platter to people who pay the moguls to obtain us; it's is a modern slave trading operation with a virtual illusion of never having been snatched away from our own lives.

Anyone watching people on the street can witness this enslavement as people exercise, jog, push strollers, commute, walk their dogs, attend recitals, or eat at restaurants; all with their heads bowed in irreverent homage to their new master, with little attention allotted to where they are, what they are doing, or who they are with. We are all now the people that 1984 Apple Super Bowl commercial for the first Mac; mesmerized, narcotizad and available for harvesting by the techno-elite.

The clearest thinker on technology and society delights

This was one of the best books I have read in years. Anyone who is interested in the role of technology, particularly information technology, in our lives and it's threats and limitations - as well as potential, this is as good of a read as you will find. Carr is a masterful writer, a great researcher and clear thinker. He's not 'drank the cool-aid' of the tech world, but knows what it smells like.

A valuable critical guide to Cyberutopia

This is a fine read: ingenious, nicely written, full of insights and humor. I enjoyed it thoroughly and, particularly, the following paragraph inspired me: "The millions of people who write ...book reviews for Amazon don't get paid for their labor, but the content they create is a valuable asset for the companies.
It's a modern kind of sharecropping system." ( pg. 29 of the Kindle edition)
