What a great book! A real gem!

Recently, there has been rapidly growing interest in all things related to AI and robotics, resulting in a slew of new books. David Hambling's "Swarm troopers" stands out as undoubtedly one of the best books (if not the best) discussing military applications of one particular kind of robots - the drones.
It's a very well researched book, mixing, in my opinion, historical reviews with the very up-do-date analysis of technology in just the right proportion.
Being an active researcher in robotics, I thought I knew the field pretty well. And yet, I got a lot of very useful information from the book, specifically about various military-oriented research projects pursued both in academia and in commercial companies. There were quite a few "gotcha" moments - I thought that the author missed an important piece of technology or research, only to discover that it's being discussed at length in one of the subsequent chapters.
The author took a very sober stance toward the prospects of the current technology. It's not one of those books trying to convince the reader that there is some kind of "superintelligence" lurking for us around the corner. It's rather: "this project (or product) demonstrated that such and such technology is applicable in these circumstances".
I must admit that the title of the book was a bit misleading for me. I associated the word "swarm" with something portrayed in the remake of the movie "The day the Earth stood still". I was not particularly interested in this kind of SF. Fortunately, I looked up the book content and discovered that it's not what the author actually meant. In his terminology, a swarm is any combination of drones (even if there are only 2 of them) working cooperatively to reach some goal. Also, the author doesn't claim that high level intelligence can somehow (magically?) arise from putting together great numbers of dumb units. He rather analyses which goals can be attained (which targets can be attacked) by big swarms of relatively simple cheap drones, and which ones require more intelligent robotic collaborators in smaller quantities. And all this is based on the rather painstaking description of individual capabilities of currently existing and upcoming drones.
This book is definitely a must-read for everybody pursuing research in robotics (especially for those who hope for military use of their technology), as well as for military and security thinkers and decision makers.
General public can get a very precise and still very entertaining presentation of the current state and the future of the field, especially as some of those technologies are being increasingly adopted by terrorists (hmmm, maybe "entertaining" is not the right word in this context). Anyway, if you are a layman you'll get at least some idea of what is coming and is going to influence your life as much as the lives of people in uniform who will try to protect you. And if you'd like a more fictional depiction, read the book "Ghost fleet" http://www.amazon.com/Ghost-Fleet-Novel-Next-World/dp/0544142845/ which elaborates on what might happen if current negative tendencies are not overcome.
P.S. After reading "Swarm troopers" and "Ghost fleet" I started to think that American military have two main enemies. No, not ISIS, nor Taliban. Not even Russians or Chinese military. The two enemies are complacency and neglect.

An excellent book on both the history and state of the art of drone technology. Well-researched and enjoyable to read, this book begins by introducing the reader to some of the fascinating precursors to modern day drone technology... bat bombs, Fu-Go balloons etc. and ends with some very detailed discussion about the possibilities presented by drone swarm technology. In the middle are fascinating revelations about who is working on drone technology, where the edges of the technology are, and the politics of drone technology. I found the book to be immensely thought provoking. The question in many technology circles is often; "If the technology is the best, why is it not implemented by us?". Swarm Troopers addresses that question in many ways that will likely surprise (and possibly anger) the reader. The presentation of the logistics and consequences of drone swarms predicted to be used for war purposes in the future are comprehensive and presented from a variety of perspectives. If you are interested in, or concerned about drone warfare, you will find this book an excellent time investment.

A Trooper of a book with Swarms of info.

A grabbing title which gives this non-fiction book a real sci-fi feel and deservedly so. Drones have been a futuristic phenomenon mentioned in many sci-fi books and films, but we are now in that future. Drones have been used effectively and now every Military Unit wants one, and they are even the toy of the moment to be seen being flown by toy shop staff in every Mall.

David Hambling offers an easy to read conversational tone throughout the book which keeps you flipping the pages and wanting more, the content is relevant and flows well; each chapter having an entertaining quote which is then explained in greater detail. Every fact is researched and proper references given for further study if you so wish.
A must-have book for anyone interested in modern weapons, warfare or non-fiction writing. Although I am not often found reading military books this is really worth the time and effort. A super book and I will be reading more of his books.

Order it if plagued with UTI's and cannot take Rx drugs

I just devoured it as soon as I received it. It makes sense and I have been unable to find anyone anywhere to help us. My 80 year old mother is allergic to more than half of available antibiotics and now the pathogens are resistant to the antibiotics she can take. So grateful. Using the suggested supplements to eliminate proteus m. proteus penneri an klebsiella p. Hope it works and she will not get sick anymore with this nightmare! Your book and you are lifesavers Scott McLeod

Great Read and With a lot a great insight

I was so surprise to read this Book. It answered all the questions I had. Did not want to go on Antibiotics again for an UTI. This book allow me to try another method. To my surprise it has worked. Now I can also prevent this UTI's from reoccurring.

New Hope for UTI

I purchased this book because I was getting a bladder infection very 2 months. I wanted them to stop and I wanted to stop taking antibiotics. I have only read this book, but have not tried the suggestions to avoid bladder infections since I am currently on antibiotics to get rid of an infection. This book is full of good information and gives me much hope that I can work to eliminate future infections.

At the same time I purchased this ebook, I purchased another ebook titled, "Urinary Tract Infection: #1 Best Methods To Permanently Beat & Cure Urinary Tract Infection For Life". Unfortunately that book seems worthless to me. This book gives one a plan for the future. It also has a link to the author's webpage where you an see the products of quality to buy. The other book doesn't help much.

I had purchased test strips about 9 months ago, the kind used in the doctor's office. They helped me to identify a current bladder infection and get to a doctor early enough to avoid much pain. But I usually waited until the test strips showed more than a trace of a bladder infection before going to the doctor's office. With the aid of the test strips and the help of this book, I have hope that I can now start treating myself very early and knock out the infection without using antibiotics. But better yet, this book gives me information to avoid getting an infection. I look forward to following the author's suggestions.

Intro to Physical Chem for biochemists

This book gives a good overview of physical chemistry for bio students. It is somewhat abridged-covers almost all the topics in a normal P chem course-but places its main emphasis on describing the concepts in the context of cellular and molecular biology. Most chapters have a short section describing how topics relate to biochemistry (DNA renaturation is a 2nd order reaction, thermodynamics of ions in solutions, ions and cell membranes, etc.)
It makes use of some calculus, but eases into it gently to avoid overwhelming the student. I grant you that it is about 20 years old, but the laws of thermodynamics and quantum mechanics haven't changed much in this time.

This is simply the best physical chemistry text I have ever used. It is full of unique insights that are thought-provoking, presents things from a physical, rather than mathematical perspective, and explains thermodynamics better than anything else I have read.

"Making Things Right"....A Humanitarian Approach to Physical Chemistry

Dear Readers
I wonder how come there was only one edition?
The authors discuss the personalities and lives of who, I am assuming they consider "heroes" of science.
If it were only so simple. What about the other "greats"? Right, I get it.
I got this thing in 2005. And it was originally published back in 1979.
I wonder "have things changed since then?"....the era of the 1970's. Kind of an idealistic era. ( to cross-reference check out Edward Teller's interview on You Tube where he discusses the "control" scientists have on their discoveries.........."for better or worse".....as he puts it....thx)
In some ways the book is good. It's certainly user friendly. That is it contains a lot of solved problems.

I would certainly have been interesting to be in the author's classes. Just to "check out their psychology".
The suicide note of Percy Bridgman is talked about. ( another "star" of the physical sciences who could have gotten the cure for cancer but didn't)

Then of course there are the shall we call it the "human interest" essays that are dotted throughout the book. This book is almost as much about the humanities as it is the sciences. That is the authors seem to be trying to make a point about humanity as much as they are trying to teach one physical chemistry.

Interestingly enough there is only one edition of the book.

Despite all this the book contains lots of good problem solutions and discussions and good true or false quizes at the end of each chapters.

The book Angulo actually did write is a long-time-frame account of FPCUs in the United States based mostly on published sources of data. This he does very well, recalling (at least to me, since I have read literature on the emergence of professionalization of law and medicine) the absence of professional training before the Civil War and the gradual growth of professional standards and professional education in the “progressive era” (1890-1916). Just how untrained physicians through most of the 19th century were is scary.

Universities were reluctant to add business schools (though one would hardly guess that from the focus on MBAs now!) and for-profit business programs taught good penmanship as well as accounting.

Though FPCUs existed through the 19th century, the real boom fed on the federal money aimed to educate WWII veterans. The enabling legislation (Servicemen’s Readjustment Act of 1944) specifically forbade any attempt to impose national standards and most states showed no interest in establishing the efficacy (in terms of skills or employment related to “training” and “education” funded by the GI Bill). The number of FPCUs jumped from less than 2000 in 1944 to more than 7000 by 1949. A 1950 VA study of allegations of fraud found that 78% were made against for-profit institutions, many of which took the money and ran (aka “fly by night” businesses that disappeared, plus those going into bankruptcies).

That boom (with concomitant education bust) paled before the gold rush by FPCUs following the Higher Education Act of 1965. Those setting up Educational Opportunity grants should have looked at how so much money was diverted from education to marketing and other kinds of administration maximizing profits in the case of the GI bill(s). Actually, no knowledge of this history is necessary to guess that if the federal government insured student loans, institutions would recruit “students” wanting degrees rather than any education and that the profits from guaranteed loans would guarantee recruitment of those who would drop out and default on loans, especially with little or no education actually available to them.

Similarly, anyone with much familiarity with American politics would know that there would be resistance to any objective evaluations (of FPCUs, or of anything else), that there would be concerted efforts to fund Christianist institutions (“Bible colleges”) with tax dollars under the guise of “religious freedom,” and that massive lobbying campaigns would water down any attempts at regulation. The appointment of industry insiders with an aversion to regulating the institutions they had been employed by or would be employed by after leaving office is especially flagrant in the case of the federal education officials appointed by George W. Bush and California ones appointed by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, but the examples of US Senators caving in return for fairly negligible favors (not just campaign contributions) from FPCU lobbyists Angulo mentions are very liberal Democrats, Ted Kennedy and Tom Harkins. (After demanding evidence from Reagan’s Secretary of Education William Bennett against one of Kennedy’s contributors, Kennedy publicly accepted that allegations were true.)

If not amazing, it is appalling that FCPUs managed to dilute the requirement that 15% of FCPU income for institutions certified for guaranteed stundent loans not come from the federal government’s guaranteed loans to 10%. I think that it should be 50+%.

Having tried to stay within the bounds of the book Angulo wrote, I will extend beyond his inquiry to point out (as he occasionally alludes to) that some of the problems of rapidly rising administrative costs and executive salaries (as more and more of the teaching is done by adjuncts who are paid little more than Walmart greeters), grade inflation and general debasement of standards afflict public and private (nonprofit) colleges and universities, too, but the quantitative differences between them and NCPUs are very staggering. Take the $42 million 2009 compensation for Robert Silberman, CEO of for-profit Strayer Education (in contrast to $800,000 for the president of Harvard). And the ratio of spending on marketing to that on providing education is similarly off-the-chart for FPCUs in comparison to nonprofit educational institutions.

The Title is Only the Beginning of its Problems

This book is a fraud, a misdirection. Even if I accept everything the author presented at face value, there are still several problems with the book. In this review I present concerns about the title, the approach, the balance of the account, and the conclusions.

The title, "Diploma Mills," is inflammatory, particularly in how it is applied. This term normally refers to operations that purport to award university degrees from institutions that sound real, but are not recognized as degree-granting. Often no academic work is actually required, just payment of a fee. The diploma (and other faux documents, like transcripts) serves to bolster the holder's false claims of having graduated with the degree indicated. This is NOT what the book is about. Instead, it is an indictment of for-profit higher education. The author considers for-profit schools to be frauds, but starts out his book by perpetrating a fraud in the use of that title.

I also object to the author's approach to the subject. Clearly, he has a conclusion in mind from the beginning and then presented his case like a prosecutor. This theory-to-evidence approach (deduction) is fine, if you lay the groundwork for why the theory is in place to begin with. Instead, the author just assumes the basic premise, and then sets out to bludgeon the reader with examples supporting it. I wonder, however, what the other case is? Given that for-profit schools have existed for just about as long as traditional universities have in this country, what could possibly be driving that? The author never presents that side of things, merely attributing the operation of these schools to greed and evil. But if he'd taken an inductive (evidence-to-theory) approach, and allowed the complete story to emerge, what might the conclusions have been? Or, given his predisposition, what conclusions might the reader be allowed to form? We can't know from this presentation.

Then there's balance. At least three-quarters of the book is spent on the past history of these schools. While interesting, it's not exactly supportive of the conclusions drawn. Until the rise and pre-eminence of accreditation during the late 19th and through the first half of the 20th centuries, schools training people in trades (including law, medicine, and business, as the author shows us) operated without serious oversight and with full separation from the classical curricula offered by degree granting colleges and universities (which these schools were not). As the universities took over the teaching of these subjects, for-profits were shoved to the side, left with other, non-academic trades to teach. It wasn't until the 1970s (and the University of Phoenix) that we saw the for-profits make a strong move into the academic arena. BUT THIS WAS A DIFFERENT PHENOMENON! It wasn't like someone running a barber college decided to morph it into a university. Instead, universities popped up designed to (a) award recognized (by accreditors) degrees and (b) enrich the investors in the university. This had almost nothing to do with trade schools ripping off the GI BIll or the Pell Grant program. Yet the author makes this leap without explanation, as if we're all supposed to just go along. But this concept--for-profit universities awarding degrees--is his real complaint. In fact, trade schools--many of which also accredited by recognized agencies--have operated continuously to present-day. But the author abandons this subject--again, most of the book--as soon as he gets to his real thesis. But I guess he wouldn't have a book, just an article that no one would read.

Finally, his conclusions. Let's stipulate that there has been abuse by even modern-day for-profit schools. (Especially compelling are the low graduation rates and the high default rates on student loans.) Where are the abuses from traditional universities to be discussed? That bunch has been operating as an oligarchy for decades. The vast--VAST!--majority of the current student loan crises stems from students attending traditional, not-for-profit universities (both public and private). Tuition prices far outstrip the pace of inflation, and great questions as to the utility of these degrees in the marketplace are being raised. But the author completely glides past this much larger blight on the American higher education scene. Amazing.

Also, the author ignores the fact that all of the financial aid abuse (his main pet peeve) occurs at schools accredited by agencies recognized by the Department of Education for the purposes of rendering these schools eligible to participate in Federal financial aid. Where is his discussion of THAT? It's not there. And what about the fact that there are several agencies recognized to accredit degree-granting institutions? Three of these, beyond the regional associations, accredit primarily for-profit universities. Two of them, however, seem to do better at it than even the regional associations, with the third being a real problem. Does the author make these distinctions? No.

What about the relative value of degrees awarded by schools accredited by these associations? The author fails to examine this, despite the fact that the real explosion of for-profit schools has occurred in this sector. My own doctoral research and others have indicated there are real differences here-differences that can affect the value of the education received (through the utility of the degrees awarded). But again, the author fails to distinguish among these.

Finally, what about the for-profit schools that are regionally accredited? Sure, the University of Phoenix has come under considerable scrutiny for its recruiting practices, lower graduation rates, and higher loan default rates. But what about its curricula? Do students earn a real degree there? The author seems to dismiss that possibility through the use of the title "Diploma Mills," but never actually explores this question. And what about the number of for-profit universities that are accredited and operating without these problems? Hardly any mention of pioneers like Walden, American Military, and the University of Sarasota (now Argosy University), all of whom seemed to have settled into the accredited higher education sector quite nicely. Oh, and while I'm at it, what about schools specifically set up to address the needs of nontraditional students, but are not-for-profit? How does the not-for-profit National University differ from, say, Strayer University? We'll never know by reading this book.

There is a huge difference between having a bunch of observations and forming them into a carefully crafted thesis. The author fails to make this leap successfully. If you're willing to ignore the authors predispositions, leaps in logic, and conclusions, there are a lot of interesting facts to be had in between. But that's not what we paid for, is it?

Lots of data, not enough testimony

I certainly agree with Angulo's concluding remarks. The "market funded" or "private sector" (as the for-profits try to rebrand themselves lately) sector of higher education does not differ from traditional public or private institutions merely by its shareholders and CEOs. It differs fundamentally, for the imperative to make money diminishes all the other components of the college or university mission.

Academic freedom, the necessity to support quality faculty, the investment in salaries for qualified staff, and the nature of caring for students beyond delivering a bare-bones education during their enrollment are all lacking compared to standard campuses. Angulo accumulates the statistics that prove early on, business schools in the 19th century were gouging their students, and already, the emphasis lay in luring easy targets into the system. Paying up front, as well, guaranteed a steady income for the owners, even if then as now many students soon failed.

While Angulo provides a survey of this system, and how it has worsened as online schools enter, and as campuses are thbought up by profiteers to reinvent themselves as market-driven entities, he does not give enough of the personal stories that could have enriched his dry research. Why not interview faculty or admissions staff at these places? Talk to students, such as single moms or veterans, laid-off workers or those fresh out of an inner-city high school, about why they chose such a degree program over a community or state college. The facts are gathered, but not these voices of the more than 10% of enrolled college students in these institutions, who also get almost half of student financial aid (mostly loans) and who (the GI Bill offers a loophole to the 10% federal restriction requirement on non-government financial aid coming in for students, curiously) default at discouraging levels. Angulo feels that for-profits should compete on the market free of federal aid, but his case might have been bolstered if his data had been supplemented by testimony not from Congress or lobbyists alone, but from the cohorts working and enrolling here.

A New Classic

Careful exegesis and thoughtful applications characterize this book. It is a book for anyone in the church who wants to know how the New Testament church was organized. From the beginning distinction between biblical authority (a fundamental for all Christians) and New Testament authority for the church (a Baptist distinctive) Bauder captured my attention and respect as a careful thinker. For his masterful treatment of the Scriptures that are used as proof-texts for Landmarkism & baptismal regeneration, he proved himself a careful expositor.
His list of Baptist distinctives is different than the usual BAPTISTS acrostic, but is an improvement. The same issues are dealt with but the refining of ideas is very helpful and (as mentioned above in the case of "B" for "Bible, our sole authority") more to the point. Interwoven throughout these chapters are practical applications for related issues (for example, civil disobedience with regard to abortion in the chapter on Separation of Church and State).
As a missionary pastor I found the chapters on Regenerate Church Membership and Congregational Government to be most helpful. Bauder lays a solid biblical foundation for these aspects of the New Testament church. He has no "Baptist" axe to grind; he is just being purely and thoroughly biblical.
I look forward to future "revisions" of this work not for any weakness I found in it but for the inclusion of more materials of this caliber that relate to the church.

Outstanding work!

I agree wholeheartedly with Art from NZ! Dr. Bauder's exposition is methodical, fair, and without overreaching bias. He obviously believes strongly in the Baptist distinctives, but he holds those beliefs with an appropriately humble grip. I'm going to use it as a textbook for an Adult Sunday School class. It's a must read for anyone who claims to be a Baptist, but also for many former Baptists and Evangelicals who think the "Baptist" label means little or nothing. In the end they may not agree with the substance of the meaning, but they will be unable to deny it's significance.

About the Author
Henrik Ibsen was born at Skien in Norway in 1828. He turned to journalism and playwriting instead of pursuing a university career. Ibsen was one of the earliest writers to dramatise the individual's alienation from society. Although Ibsen was never fully appreciated during his lifetime, he has since come to be recognised as one of the great dramatists of all time and the "Father of Modern Drama."

Peter Watts trained as a doctor at Cambridge but then turned to journalism and the theatre.

Stunning Masterpiece

A Doll's House is the play that made Henrik Ibsen world famous; though it got substantial acclaim, much initial attention came from controversy - and some from outrage. However, time has sided with it, proving Ibsen's points and burying naysayers under a pile of narrow-minded hypocrisy; the play remains Ibsen's most popular and one of his most acclaimed, taking its high place in the world literary canon.

Often called the first feminist play, A Doll's is a savage critique of Victorian - I use the term loosely, Ibsen being Norwegian - society's treatment of women. It gives a vivid idea of just how repressed they were in everything from speech to employment; their very thoughts were persecuted as far as possible. We also see what form this took in the domestic sphere; patriarchy is lambasted and exposed as hollow, and male-female relations generally are thoroughly critiqued. The marriage institution is not spared Ibsen's unflinching eye, while motherhood and other related issues are also taken into account. Victorian society had very settled ideas about such issues and did not take kindly to Ibsen's rankling, but the play was a much-needed wake-up call, provoking extensive debate and perhaps being one of the liberalizing forces eventually leading to reform. That such a work was written nearly a century and a half ago by a man is truly incredible. It says much that many of those who decried it most loudly were women; a prominent actress even refused to play the lead without an altered ending. Ibsen was clearly one of those rare artists who truly has a finger on the cultural pulse; he knew just what buttons to push and hit with a sledgehammer.

The play would of course be of only historical interest if it merely dealt with long-vanished injustice, but this is far from so. For one thing, sexism is sadly still very prevalent, even in the Western world, despite great advances. Some of the issues are thus still relevant even in this strict sense, showing just how far ahead of his time Ibsen was. More fundamentally, many core concerns - e.g., how to balance self-respect and ambition with marriage and children - are as old as civilization. The play will continue speaking to us profoundly as long as they remain unsolved, which shows no sign of being anytime soon. The best aspect in this regard is that it is not heavy-handed. Ibsen wrote many of what he called "problem plays" dealing with contemporary social problems without the didacticism that so often plagues such works and is nearly always fatal. He raises important questions but knows better than to give answers; that is for us to do. Like all his major work, A Doll's is highly thought-provoking. We may not agree with Nora, but she certainly makes us rethink long-held and oft-unquestioned assumptions - perhaps rethinking but at least surveying critically -, which may be art's true function and is certainly the highest praise sociopolitically aware art can receive.

But the play would be very enjoyable and laudable even if we noticed none of this, and there may indeed be more immediate reasons for its greatness and continuing relevance. The character of Nora is an undeniably big factor. Sympathetic almost immediately, she engages both heart and mind; we have empathy for her thoughts and feelings because of her undeniable humanity. She has much that is admirable, even noble, but also has undeniable weaknesses; perhaps more than the former, the latter make her seem all the more human and relatable. It is a tribute to Ibsen's artistry that he makes even the most conservative onlookers quickly like her, which makes the powerful conclusion all the more forceful. Other characters of course pale beside her not only in importance but in goodness yet are not without relevance. Much of the ending's power indeed comes from the realization that Torvald is not really bad. He is certainly condescending, self-absorbed, sexist, and narrow-minded, but these are faults of the age; he is no worse than the average Victorian man - perhaps even better in that he truly cares for Nora in his patronizing way. What happens to him could have happened to any Victorian husband - which is exactly the point. Krogstad is also important in this way; we are ostensibly supposed to hate him, but his actions are after all understandable and all too human. We may criticize but should not condemn. All this drives in Ibsen's point that the problems were symptoms of a culture, not a few backward individuals.

The tightly plotted and deftly executed story is another strength. The ending is of course deservedly famous, pulled off perhaps more effectively than any other in drama; it is led up to with truly artistic precision, the timing is impeccable, and the final door slam is the most brilliantly perfect yet subtle use of sound ever written into a play. Also, as George Bernard Shaw noted and others have come to appreciate ever more, the ending skillfully inverts the "well-made play" formula then considered obligatory. Ibsen tricked audiences into thinking the climax was the conclusion, which made the ending all the more stunning; we may miss the irony, but the essential effect is hardly dimmed. However, we must not let the ending blind us to overall quality. The play is highly emotional and supremely engrossing throughout despite having very little of what we now call action - an Ibsen trademark and a key ingredient in his greatness. He was a master of irony, foreshadowing, and other dramatic techniques, using them to full effect here; the satire making up much of the play is also immaculately done.

A Doll's is simply incredible in every aspect, essential for anyone even remotely interested in drama, women's issues, the Victorian era - or great literature itself.

This is a suspenseful realistic play

The critic H. L. Mencken described Henrik Ibsen's plays as "obvious thoughts in sound plays." There is "nothing mysterious in them; there is not even anything new in them." Ibsen offered reality. He was not interested in presenting "morals, lesson, symbols and that sort of thing." Yet, "he hit upon an action that was all suspense and all emotion." Mencken quotes Ibsen: "What I wanted to do was to depict human beings, human emotions, and human destinies, upon groundwork of certain of the social conditions and principles of the present day." While many people may agree with Mencken, others will say that Ibsen was trying to show what was the proper behavior that people should follow.

This portrayal of reality and what is proper behavior is seen in A Doll's House. It is realistic and, in addition, it is relevant, but the play also addresses what is proper. Ibsen portrays a husband and a wife. The wife is a "doll," beautiful, unsophisticated, childlike, well-meaning, but ignorant of the adult world and affairs. All of her friends see her as a doll. Her husband treats her as one, calling her childish names. He tries to control all of her behavior, not because he is mean, but because he loves her and he realizes that she is unable to do so. He tells her what to eat so that her teeth will not be spoiled from sugar and how much she should spend because she does not understand much about money.

And it is the latter, the money, that gets her into trouble. Her husband was sick some years back and needed to travel and stay in a warmer climate for some months, but the couple had no money. She, out of childish but ignorant love, borrowed money from an unscrupulous man who insisted that she have her father countersign the loan. Her father was dying, so she forged his signature on the loan document. She was certain that this was not wrong because her intentions were pure, she wanted to save her husband's life. She did not tell her husband about the loan because she childishly wanted to surprise him someday in the future and show him that she acted wisely and that she, who he thought of as childlike, saved his life. She laughed about her cleverness often when she was alone.

Now the unscrupulous lender is demanding something from her, or he will reveal the forgery to her husband and his employer, and this will affect her marriage and her husband will lose his job.

All of this probably would not have occured if the people would have treated women properly, as human beings, not dolls.

An important feminist classic

I don't normally read plays, so I have to admit that I went into reading A Doll's House with a fair bit of trepidation. I needn't have worried, though, because I zipped through the book in one sitting and it provided me with much food for thought.

What surprised me about A Doll's House was just how current the message is, especially since it was written in 1878. For the first fifty pages or so, the message is definitely dated, as women now have autonomy over financial decisions and most women have held a job at some point in their lives. I also think most marriages are pretty equal in terms of who gets to decide what happens with the family finances (at least, most marriages that I know of). But it's the end of the book that really gets to the heart of the matter, and that's where I think the play really shines and holds significance for women of today's world.

While I don't want to give anything important away, the end of the book is basically a stand-off between Nora and Torvald. Nora is asserting the fact that she is a person, independent from her duties as wife and mother, and she should be treated as such. She makes the case that just because she is a wife and mother, her own humanness shouldn't be sacrificed for the sake of her husband and children, and that she should have the right to think for herself and make decisions according to what is best for her individually. I think that many mothers struggle with this even today - the question of being an independent person apart from one's husband and children is something that I see all the time. Women ask themselves, do I make a decision based on what's best for me, best for my husband, best for my children, or do I try to make a compromise for all of us? While A Doll's House was about more than just that question, that was the point Nora got to by the end of the play and I do feel that was, in the end, the biggest message here. Women do compromise their needs and desires and put the other members of their family first - and by the end of the play, Nora wasn't interested in doing that anymore.

Anyways, I really appreciated A Doll's House for its central message and was surprised to find how current that message still is. For anyone interested in reading classic feminist literature, this book is an important work to pick up.
