A Most Intriguing Story

This is the fascinating account of the so-called dancing plague of 1518 Strasbourg. Although this type of plague does not appear to be as well-known as other remarkable events that have occurred in history, its 1518 occurrence was not the first and not quite the last. The author does an excellent job of setting the scene for this event on the political, cultural and especially religious fronts. The dancing plague itself is then described in great detail as are the attempts at curing the many who were so tragically afflicted. Since the ultimate cure may seem rather astonishing to the modern reader, the author finally compares this plague with other more or less equivalent events in the modern world. Consequently, the last chapter makes for fascinating reading on the nature of the human mind. The writing style is elegant and authoritative, scholarly but accessible and most engaging. This book can be enjoyed by anyone, but those with a penchant for medieval history and for psychology will be in for a special treat.

Great Concept but Weak Execution

"A Time to Dance a Time to Die" sounds better than it reads. Its the story of crazed dancing in 16th century Strasbourg involving several hundred people who are unable to stop except from exhaustion. Mr. Waller attempts to find the source of illness. He see the origins in the brutal conditions, the hunger and poverty of the citizens of Strasbourg, accentuated by the religiousity of those times.

But really what is so significant about a few hundred people going a bit nuts five hundred years ago? Supposedly there were deaths but probably not even twenty and its not completely clear that the cause was the dancing. The books title promises something more ghastly, a society gone haywire when in fact it was probably less then one percent of the population of the city involved. And given the paucity of sources about these events, it gives the book a hazy, unreal quality. Waller tries to be historically accurate and yet there is a feeling of thinness, of question marks around the most basic facts of the story.

Frankly, I think this book could have been a forty page essay.

Major studio collaborations have included founding positions at The Trumbull Company (1992), Digital Domain (1993) and Warner Brothers (1994), consulting to Sony Pictures Imageworks (1995) and Dreamworks (2003) and two tours at Industrial Light + Magic (1991 and 1996-2000). Terrence also single-handily created the original CG animation and rendering techniques to launch South Park the television series in 1996. As an independent VFX Supervisor and Senior Technical Director he has contributed to over 20 major film projects including Fantastic Four, Hook, True Lies, The Star Wars Trilogy Special Edition, Spawn, Batman Forever, Small Soldiers and Star Wars Episode I: Phantom Menace. Large format projects include Luxor for Doug Trumbull and Mars Odyssey for Simex. His many national commercial projects include the original Bud Frogs (1995) for Digital Domain and the award winning Dodge Molecule for ILM-Commercials. Terrence has also produced and directed real-time hardware graphics for major titles such as Bruce Lee: Quest of the Dragon for Universal Interactive, SimCity4 for Maxis/EA and Batman: Dark Tomorrow for Kemco/Japan. As an award winning Animation Director his short animated films (including Bunkie & Booboo) have been featured in festivals worldwide. Terrence is a much sought after lecturer and has spoken at dozens of animation festivals, conferences and universities around the world on a wide range of topics. He is a long time member and supporter of both the Visual Effects Society and ACM/SIGGRAPH. He is currently the Computer Animation Festival Chair for SIGGRAPH 2006

Not only are the computer acronyms explained, they are accompanied with a little history of the term and references to who and why uses the products.
Also many popular software titles are referred to, which is great for deciding what software to use to meet my goals.

Highly dissapointing book.

To be fair to Paul Rubillo, I am a subscriber to his website Dividen.com. As a dividend investor, his website provides useful information when I am buying dividend stocks. That disclosure aside, "Be a Dividend Millionaire" was absolutely useless for a dividend investor.
The first 35 pages of the book was wasted on information telling the reader how to save money on household expenses. The same type of information that can be obtained from the financial section of any newspaper.
After the "Larry Winget" section, I kept reading fully expection to have an "AHA" moment. One or two tidbits of information that would add to my knowledge of dividend investing. To my dismay, what I read in "Dividend Millionaire" was a vague generalization of investing. The only chapter that specifically focused on dividend investing, chapter 7, had but a scant 10 pages about divideds. Following that information was a list of companies called Dividend Increasers, compiled in December 31, 2009. One would think Mr. Rubillo would add information that was not 15 month old. I was not expecting the magic formula for instant wealth, just perhaps something new to add to my knowledge base, sadly I found nothing.
In all candor, "Be a Dividend Millionaire", is not a book I would recommend to either a novice or veteran dividend investor. It is somewhat anecdotal and barely skims the surface of divided investing. It is the only book I have returned to Amazon.

Judging from the title, you'd think this book was about how to build your portfolio through dividend stocks, and how to identify/analyze them. You'd be wrong. The first quarter of the book is how to manage your expenses. NONE of the info in the book is about investing in dividend stocks. The 5-star reviews here are obviously fake, as is this book.

Be a Dividend Millionaire

This is a well written and easy to read book - I finished it in one night. It conveys convincingly the advantages of investing in dividend stocks. Not a new idea, but Paul goes a step further by explaining the methodology used in his site (Dividend.com), to select such stocks. It also includes an engaging chapter on his life as a day trader. People in the trade will relate well to it.

Unfortunately, the book falls short on a critical aspect. It does not provide a methodology for building a portfolio. For example, if Clara has $100,000 and wants to star building a dividend driven portfolio, what are the steps she has to take? Yes, there are different lists of selected stocks in the site based on risk tolerance and yield levels - the ingredients - but the mixing instructions are nowhere to be found. A missed opportunity that should be addressed in future editions.

About the Author
Vivian McCann is a senior faculty member in psychology at Portland Community College in Portland, Oregon. Throughout her 25 years of teaching college and university students, she has taught a wide variety of courses, including introductory psychology, human relations, intimate relationships, personality, leadership, and social psychology. Born and raised in the California desert just 10 miles from the Mexican border, she quickly learned the importance of understanding cultural backgrounds and values in effective communication, which laid the foundation for her lifelong interest in teaching and learning psychology from diverse cultural perspectives. Vivian loves to explore new cultures through travel, and to nurture the same interests in her students. She has led groups of her students on four trips abroad, and in her own travels has visited 35 countries so far. Her most recent adventure took her to Africa for four months, where she volunteered with women in Tanzania, worked with elephants and endangered rhinos in Zimbabwe, and trekked into the mountains of Rwanda to observe gorillas in the wild.

Vivian maintains a strong commitment to teaching excellence and has developed and taught numerous workshops. She has served on the American Psychological Association’s executive committee for Psychology Teachers at Community Colleges (PT@CC) and is an active member of the Western Psychological Association and the Association for Psychological Science. She also co-authors Psychology: Core Concepts with Philip Zimbardo and Bob Johnson. Her most recent passion involves working with The Heroic Imagination Project, a non-profit organization dedicated to teaching people of all ages to stand up, speak out, and develop their own inner heroes in pursuit of a more compassionate world.

It is what it promises, but not really worth the price

The book is exactly as advertised, "Written specifically for managers with little or no formal information technology training or expertise." It is very elementary. If you have worked in a moderate to large company, with decent IT resources, you probably know most of what's in this book. We used this text in an "IT for Managers" class I took and I probably could have winged it without the book and saved my money. This book should really be in the $25-$50 range, not $80+.
