About the Author
I have been writing plays since high school and acting since junior high. In 1988, my first play "Nicolas Brooks" had instant success by winning the Youth Division at the Spokane Civic Theatre Forum Festival in Washington State. The writing bug infected me and I decided to form my own little theatre group in 1989 called Tailors of the Imagination. At 17, I produced and directed an extended version of "Nicolas Brooks" called "Who Loves a Writer" as well as a retelling of Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde. In 1990, my play "A Man and His Plant" was produced at the Spokane Civic Theatre Forum Festival in the adult division. The play went on to win third place in a national contest and then was published by the Dramatic Publishing Company as a part of an anthology "Short Stuff for Mature Actors." In New Mexico, I started a theatre group called the Poco Loco Players which have successfully produced four seasons including several plays that I co-wrote with the other Poco Loco Players. I also started the successful website called freedrama.com which has provided free plays to schools and community groups around the world. My 2002 victory as a writer was being included in the Love Creek Production's play festival in New York City. My monologue "Pearls of Wisdom" is the true story of the struggles young women face growing up in rural Idaho. Another success was a 2004 midwest tour of my play "The Redneck" (renamed Operation Redneck) by the professional theatre group Retroact Productions. During this time, freedrama.com became very popular receiving thousands of visitors. My plays on freedrama.com (now freedrama.net) have been performed on every continent including Antarctica. I'm now involved in developing film projects as a writer and producer. In 2008, I started a new series about War Veterans. The series has been featured by Apple iTunes and YouTube. The most successful episode has been "Saving Lives in World War II" which won an Emmy Award in 2009 for best Advanced Media Historical Documentary (Rocky Mountain Region). In 2010, I won a Telly Award for my full length documentary about a wildlife park in Arizona. And in 2011, I won a second Emmy Award for my short documentary about an organization called Paws and Stripes that helps veterans with PTSD using service dogs.

This Book is a Must Have for RoofCutters

This is a must have book for roof framing. The drawings and principles are layed out very well and as cleanly as you can for a book like this. It covers just about every roof framing situation you will likely encounter, and the principles and techniques will help you solve the ones that aren't covered.

If you are serious about learning to cut and stack roofs, then buy this book. Or if you are like me, buy a few and give them to your framers.

Best book on roof framing

Its well worth the price for this book, I covers everything you want to know in roof framing, nothing you can find in other roof framing books.

Every picture detail has the math on the same page so you dont have to flip pages and flip back and get confussed,
I like it.

Sensual and Beautiful Story

Mikalo’s Fate is a lush, sensual story that picks up with Mikalo Delis and Ronan, who are planning to wed in Greece. The two share a deep, spiritual connection and the sex scenes are erotic and beautifully written. The very wealthy and sexy Mikalo comes from a controlling, traditional family and none of them take kindly to Ronan upon her arrival in Greece. Ronan’s only ally is her friend Deni who comes to her rescue during a wedding-dress shopping fiasco. To her credit, Ronan stands her ground with Mikalo’s family, even though they do everything in their power to block the upcoming wedding. Most women would have run away without looking back! But Mikalo loves Ronan intensely, and he always makes her feel sexy, desirable and loved. This is a fairly quick, lushly written read that does not disappoint with the steam factor. The conclusion is very satisfying, and leads into a new storyline involving the very sexy Damen and Deni. I’m looking forward to more stories from Syndra involving sexy Greek guys!

Syndra outdid herself with this book and took her already amazing writing to a whole new level. I felt so many emotions for both Mikalo and Ronan. I laughed, cried and just had those moments of pure hurt and sadness for Ronan. But, she found strength, dug deep down and found the courage she needed to stand up for herself and the heart full of love she had for Mikalo. This book will leave butterflies in your stomach, tears in your eyes and then finally a smile of happiness on your face.

Ronan is finally at a place in her life where everything seems to be coming together - her career, her home and her beloved Mikalo. He asked her to marry him (in the most romantic of ways!) and now they are to journey to Greece together to introduce her to his beloved Nona and the rest of the Delis family.

Up until now, it has just been the two of them - her and Mikalo. They have sheltered each other from the rest of the world and what anyone else might think of their relationship never mattered. But when Ronan enters the Delis compound on an island in the Aegean Sea, the opinions of others could mean the difference between her happiness and a life of despair. As she tries desperately to win their approval, Ronan fights with her own insecurity and doubts. Can she overcome them all and have her happy ever after with the only man she has ever wanted heart and soul?

Mikalo's Fate is Syndra at her romantic and poetic best. I swooned and I cried and I loved every word of this book! It was such a revelation for Ronan. She faced such disdain and hurt from the character of Caugina that she seemed to lose herself for a bit. But with the help of her friend Deni, she finds her way back and remembers what is important (and gets some sweet revenge!) Mikalo was perfection, as usual. Even through his family's apparent disapproval of his engagement to Ronan, he stood steadfast with her always proclaiming his love. There couldn't have been a better ending to this series. Bravo, Syndra! You have so much to be proud of...

Author Puts His Finger on the Problem With Protestant Theology

In 1993, Jon Ruthven wrote the most widely respected book ever written supporting the continuity of the spiritual gifts for the present church age--On the Cessation of the Charismata: The Protestant Polemic on Post-biblical Miracles--Revised & Expanded Edition. It has never been rebutted. Ruthven, in this new book, has turned his pen to a related but much more important topic: how the same theology that represses the gifts, represses the Kingdom of God. The problem with a Christian movement that is born out of opposition to another Christian movement is that, by nature, it will be jagged and incoherent and not flow smoothly from the scriptures. Reformation theology was "forged . . . in the heat of polemics and persecution" (299). Ruthven concedes that the Reformation had its good points, e.g., its position against the selling of indulgences in the Catholic Church, but its emphasis on salvation, repentance, and baptism "suggests a theology of preparation. But preparation for what? By contrast, the Bible emphasizes the goal of the Christian life, the goal for which Protestant theology is, at best, only an initiation, a good start. We all agree that the ultimate goal is intimacy and relationship with God, but what is ignored--even denied--in traditional theology is the process (direct, immediate, prophetic communication with God) of getting there. . . . [T]he goal of the Bible for the Christian life on this earth is believers' reception of, or immersion into, the Holy Spirit, whose main purpose is to reveal and empower" (35). By examining every major block of the scriptures, OT and NT, and mining the emphases of the Bible, instead of proof texting, Ruthven illustrates how Protestant theology has created a disconnect between the believer and God--the very opposite of what it is supposed to be doing! In order to oppose the Catholic doctrine of the papacy, Protestant theology had to assert that God no longer speaks to believers (revelation) and no longer sends believers out with miracle-working power. This led to the Protestant denial of all of the gifts of the Spirit, which were given for the very building up of the church and the spreading of the gospel. I cannot say that Ruthven's book is an easy read for the average Christian, but for a book on theology, I would say that, within its genre, it is an easy read. If it impacts you as it has me, it will make you want to listen for God more closely, and obey His word more diligently. I'm not sure the author thought that this complex book of over 300 pages would have that effect on a reader, but I'm guessing he wouldn't be disappointed.

A Book for "Such a Time as This"

This book has arrived at a much needed time, especially with the arrival of John McArthur's "Strange Fire" conference and book.

Ruthven shows how the Protestants of the Reformation and afterwards, in their attempts to preserve what they believed were the true apostolic teachings against Roman Catholicism's abuse, went too far in supplanting the reality of God's supernatural works, especially in the area of direct, divine communication, with the intellectual pursuit of the Bible, in the search and experience of authentic salvation.

He shows that the difference between Jesus' message and that of the religious leaders focused on how one hears God, and posits it as the same difference that exists today between cessationist and pentecostal/charismatics. Ruthven acknowledges that even Pentecostal/Charismatics, to some degree, have fallen into the theological view where the experience of God is put behind, if not totally removed, replaced by an intellectual grasp of salvation.

As I understand him, Ruthven charges that traditional theology "avoids the emphasis of Scripture which is to communicate directly and obediently with God" (p.1).

The first section provides introduces the history of how modern Protestant theology developed this slanted view of Christianity that omits the experience of the miraculous. In the second section Ruthven shows Protestant theology moved away from the Biblical emphasis of having "direct, immediate, prophetic communication with God." The author points out this communication with God is the central theme of the Old Testament.

In the third section, the author moves to show that "the experience of the prophetic Spirit - hearing God's voice," is the emphasis and goal of the New Testament. The fourth section focuses on the ministry of Jesus specifically as the one who introduced, modelled, ratified, vindicated, bestowed, and became the New Covenant. Finally, in the fifth section, the author discusses the failure of today's traditional theological education. He concludes that today's theological education "den[ies] the very Scripture it purports to defend, aspecially as the Bible centrally points away from itself too the experience of God in personal revelation and power" (p.310).

I find that this is too much of an important book for any minister of the Gospel to ignore, and one which needs to be placed in the hands of any cessationist pastor or teacher. Ruthven's "What's Wrong With Protestant Theology" convincingly challenges not only today's method of theological and ministerial education, but also summons every professing Christian denomination and institution to seriously test the soundness of what they believe by honest engagement with Biblical revelation as it clearly and plainly reads.

Ruthven, while reminding us that he is not advocating anti-intellectualism, is calling for a reevaluation of our critical core values and beliefs as believers in Messiah Jesus, a second-look into how we approach the Scriptures, and to realize that "there is nothing more crucial for the [C]hurch to 'stand mature and fully assured in the will of God' (Col 4:12) and to be able to proclaim the [G]ospel 'in demonstration of the Spirit and of power' (1 Cor 2:4) than our understanding of the central charismatice mission of Christ and our relation to it."

I cannot make any stronger a recommendation to read this book than to say, in similar words of Mordecai, that this book has been brought into our hands "for such a time as this".

Painter, musician, journalist, essayist, playwright, and composer, Alberto Savinio was one of the most gifted and singular Italian writers of the twentieth century. Italian critics rank him alongside Pirandello, Calvino and Sciascia, but he is hardly known to American readers. He was the younger brother of Giorgio De Chirico, and Andre Breton said that the whole Modernist enterprise might be found in the work of these two brothers.

Savinio composed five operas and more than forty books. A friend of Apollinaire, figures on the scene during Savinio’s artistic and literary career included Picasso, Cocteau, Max Jacob and Fernand Leger. As the translator says, “his writing, like his panting, moves easily from the everyday to the fantastic. Attempts to define it as ‘surrealist’ are too limiting. It is free in spirit, profoundly intelligent, and beautifully controlled in style.”

The stories collected in Signor Dido are his last works, one story being sent to its publisher only four days before the author’s death. And while this final collection was completed in 1952, it was not published in Italian until 1978. “Composed with an extreme economy of means, they are the summing up of a rich and complex life.... The stories contain haunting premonitions and at times piercing solitude, but they are all graced with Savinio’s high comic sense, his fine self-humor, and that stylistic irony which, as he once said, is both a mask for modesty and ‘a subtle way of insinuating oneself into the secret of things.’”

About the Author
Alberto Savinio (Andrea Francesco Alberto de Chirico) was born in Athens in 1891 and died in 1952.While still a teenager his musical compositions had drawn notice, he was a celebrated pianist, and his third opera, Perseus, had its premier at The Metropolitan Opera in New York in 1924. He wrote more than forty books including novels, criticism and memoirs. Childhood of Nivasio Dolcemare was translated into English by Richard Pevear and published in 1987.
Richard Pevear is one of the greatest translators of our time. Together with Larissa Volokhonsky, his wife, he has translated virtually the entire canon of major Russian writers, beginning with the award-winning Brothers Karamazov, all the rest of Dostoevsky's major fiction, and continuing with the work of Tolstoy, Gogol, Bulgakov, Tolstoy, Chekov, Turgenev and Pasternak.

Sympathy for the Signor

The short works included in this volume were first carried in an Italian newspaper between 1949 and 1952. They concern the politics of domesticity and the striving of Savinio's alter ego, Signor Dido, to surmount the quotidian.

The author portrays a family "united in love, and behind that veil, mute enemies on a silent battlefield." The role of the father in post war Italy is changing and he no longer receives the largest plate for dinner. In his home, Signor Dido "would like to speak of lofty and poetic things, above all to speak of himself and hear himself spoken of." Instead, he must be silent, his arguments not taken seriously and his manner consigned to "irreducible timidity." Dido seeks refuge but does not find it in memories, which bring shame and remorse, or in sleep, as he lies wide awake at 1 a.m. his arms spread wide in Christ-like repose.

In the world of Signor Dido, "the trivia of the daily life yield to the visionary; reality suddenly turns fantastic" according translator Richard Pevear. They include a dottore who plays silent music in a hidden house, an invalid engineer who waves frantically for assistance that never arrives, ghostly soldiers returning purloined works of art and families at silent war and peace.

Dido searches endlessly for sympathy from others and, failing that, for solitude. "Little by little, (he) manages to rid himself of all foreign elements. He finally comes back to being all himself. Happiness begins. His happiness. The purest happiness. The only happiness."

Savinio advises his readers to overcome the "prejudice of seriousness which spreads so much darkness over matters of culture and life in general." In this book, he treats of serious matters but retains self-humor and high comic sense, crafting short narratives characterized by stylistic irony. Using an "extreme economy of means," the author describe a rich and complex life, says Pevear in an introduction to Signor Dido. The result, though spare, is entertaining as well as revealing.

not too bad

I thought this book might be a bit cheesy and too easy for the classroom application I had in mind, but to my surprise a good part of the book will work. Some of the "photoshopped" parts are a bit too easy and ridiculous. I am using it to expose my photo classes to some famous works of art and to develop their critical eye to spotting differences.

Disappointed

I enjoy the Life puzzle books and have bought all of them to date. Thought I'd try something a bit different, but have to say I was disappointed in this. The photography is beautiful, but because they are from "older" pictures (black and white), it tends to get boring. I prefer the colorful pictures in Life, and Life does have a classics section if you want the black and white pictures.

I am disappointed in the pictures in this book. Most of the pictures are black and white, too dark too study and find differences. I probably won't be able to do any of the puzzles in this book, except for a few.
