Strete's (They Thought They Saw Him) unremarkable tale with dramatic artwork introduces Old Foot Eater, a monster whose diet consists of "little children's feet." The beast hangs a sticky rope from a tree to ensnare the feet of unsuspecting young passersby. Wandering near the monster's tree one day, a lost boy "who had no name" encounters a rattlesnake and a scorpion. Both are amazed that the child does not harm them ("Aren't you going to beat me with a stick?" each asks the boy) and each in turn thanks the boy "for letting me be me." The creatures repay the boy's kindness when his feet get caught up in the monster's rope, and they help to set him free. Johnson and Fancher (My Many Colored Days; The Frog Prince, Continued) use mixed media to create paintings that seem at once sophisticated and primitive. Featuring a palette of tawny earth tones, the artists incorporate a top border filled with symbols from cave paintings and Southwestern petroglyphs. A particularly theatrical spread shows the boy dangling upside-down against a backdrop of the monster's face. As accomplished as the artwork is, however, it cannot carry the thin story line. Grade 1-3-Strete crafts a tale wherein good defeats evil not through the hero's cleverness but because of his respect for nature. A lost boy who lives alone in the forest is saved from a horrible monster, Foot Eater, by a rattlesnake and a scorpion. The nameless waif's "favor" to these normally persecuted creatures had been in refraining from beating them, a gesture that earned their loyalty. Johnson and Fancher's oil paintings, bordered by strips of stylized petroglyphs, effectively convey the limited action of the text but the earth tones often blend together, making it hard to tell what's going on in the two-page spreads. The boy's face is cherubic and his eyes seem vacant, visually complementing the platitudes he utters; the skeletal monster is sufficiently jagged. It's nice that these desert creatures feel compelled to come to the boy's rescue but one can't help wondering why they didn't just warn their new spiritual brother about Foot Eater's trap in the first place. This superficial tale of harmony is an object lesson that borders on the preachy but the stony monster should give youngsters a delightful chill or two.

Strete pens an ode to tolerance that is none too subtle, but the stunning artwork from Johnson and Fancher should keep viewers involved. The story is a parable couched as a Native American tale, in which a boy (identified by Strete as lost and without a name, although why this is important is never made clear) comes across a rattlesnake and a scorpion, both of whom wonder why the boy doesn't kill them: ``Why should I do that? Snakes belong in this world just like me.'' Scorpions, too, the boy chirps. The venomous critters adopt the boy as a brother and when he gets trapped by the Old Foot Eater, a monster who lives in a medicine basket on top of a tree, catching his quarry with a sticky rope, the rattlesnake and scorpion come to his rescue and seal the monster's doom. Good deeds fly thick and fast here, but without context. The illustrations draw their hues from the American southwest, while the paint is scratched to convey a sense of age and animation, and the monster is a ghoulish, block-headed, spine-chilling delight. Good, Not Great

It's a fun story for the young ones, and the illustrations are fabulously entertaining. The story itself with the ugly monster and creepy crawlers makes it engaging and sure to keep the interest of kids. But the book makes me wonder why the main character appears to be a Native American boy. This doesn't appear to be relevant to the story, though the illustrator's note mentions that some of the art was inspired by Native American art. Which group or tribe?

About the Author

Panos J. Antsaklis received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Brown University, where he was a Fulbright Scholar. His main research interests are in the area of systems and control, particularly in linear feedback systems and intelligent autonomous control systems, with emphasis on hybrid and discrete event systems and reconfigurable control. He is currently Professor of Electrical Engineering at the University of Notre Dame. He has held regular and visiting teaching and research positions at Imperial College of the University of London, Brown University, Rice University, MIT, the National Technical University of Athens, and the Technical University of Crete, Greece.

Dr. Antsaklis has been awarded a departmental outstanding teacher award and has been a keynote speaker at a number of conferences. He is also a Distinguished Lecturer of the IEEE Control Systems Society. Dr. Antsaklis has authored a number of publications in journals, conference proceedings, and books and has coedited five books as well. He has served on the editorial boards of several journals, including the IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control, IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks, and the Journal of Discrete Event Dynamic Systems, and he has been the guest editor of special issues in these and other journals. Dr. Ansaklis has served as program chair and general chair of major systems and control conferences, and he is an IEEE Fellow and the 1997 President of the IEEE Control Systems Society.

Anthony N. Michel holds a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Marquette University, as well as a D.Sc. in Applied Mathematics from the Technical University of Graz, Austria. He has extensive industrial and academic experience, and his main research interests are in control systems, circuit theory, neural networks, and applied mathematics. He is currently the Frank M. Freiman Professor of Electrical Engineering and Dean of the College of Engineering at the University of Notre Dame.

Dr. Michel has coauthored five books as well as a number of journal articles, conference proceedings, and conference books. He is a former editor of the IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems, and he has held a variety of positions on the editorial boards of the IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control, IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks, Circuits, Systems and Signal Processing, and Neurocomputing, as well as other journals. He is a past president of the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society and has served on the executive committees of several professional organizations. Dr. Michel is also the recipient of numerous professional awards. He is a Fellow of the IEEE. In 1984 he received the IEEE Centennial Medal, and he also earned three IEEE paper prizes. He spent 1992 as a Fulbright Scholar at the Technical University of Vienna, and, most recently, he received the 1995 Technical Achievement Award of the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society.

Good book....

Linear Systems by Antsaklis/ Michel is a comprehensive book on the subject. The best thing about the book is that it does not make too many presumptions about the background of the reader and starts with a detailed introduction to mathematical preliminaries before moving on to the heart of the subject. Proofs are given in detail, and the concurrent treatment of continuous and discrete time systems helps. The only negative point is the fact that no applications are stated in detail. However, the exercise problems contain a variety of them to satiate the inquisitive reader. A must have!

My business would have grown faster if I had read this before starting

Dec 1, 2012 will be my fourth year in business however I didn't realize this ebook existed until a few short weeks ago. I really came across it by chance, primarily, because a good number of people have recently been asking me how to get started as a VA and I decided to see what was out here on Amazon.

Before I recommended the book to those who have been asking me for guidance I thought I should buy and read it myself to see if it was "worth it".

I haven't even reviewed all of the worksheets,forms, etc. that are included with the package - I have only read the ebook itself....and without a doubt it's worth every penny. I wish I had known about it many years ago.

Over the course of the past four years I've made a lot of mistakes, many that would have possibly been avoided had I read the book before starting.

Here are just a few examples of things I would have done differently:
*I would have chosen a different business name and URL
*Using contracts for everyone and including some type of penalty for late payments - while I've gotten much better there are still a number of long-term clients that are still without a contract
*Identifying what I really love doing and ONLY working with those types of clients
*Built in wording on annual increases into my contract
*Set up different pricing structures/packages for different types of clients

Of course, as they say, hindsight is always 20/20. My first year of business was challenging, to say the very least, I probably could have spent my time in a much better way knowing some of what I know now. By year three I hit 6 figures and could have very well accomplished that by year two, if I had known and implemented some of the items addressed in the ebook.

I take my business very seriously because I'm a single mom and full support for my child rests on my shoulders. Whether you decide you want to pursue being a Virtual Assistant on a full time or part time basis I'd highly recommend you invest in this book and read it several times to absorb all there is within it.

A must-have for anyone thinking of starting a Virtual Assistant business

This book is a comprehensive how-to manual and workbook to get your virtual assistant business off the ground and to help your business to thrive over time. I've been a VA for 9 years and have taught a community college course (over 3 years) on how to create a virtual assistant business plan. "Become a Virtual Assistant - The Virtual Assistant Forums Guide to Success" covers the nuts and bolts of creating an entrepreneurship. It has exercises to help you think about the tough questions that need answering before starting a business. It discusses legal, ethical, tax, and contractual issues that you need to know as well as practical issues like invoicing and business policies. Moreover, it touches on how to have a great relationship with clients. Thankfully, marketing is a large portion of the book to help VAs figure out the essential aspects of "how to get clients." The book comes with a plethora of worksheets, business documents, and sample contracts too. The only other component necessary for a successful VA practice is a place where you can go for support on your VA journey, and the Virtual Assistant Forums website is an ideal place for that. I highly recommend this book.

Interestingly, the e-Book is not simply a 'how-to'. While reading the e-Book, I felt as if a seasoned VA was leaning over my shoulder offering sage advice and tips to successfully grow the business after start-up. It is THAT well-written!

Every conceivable scenario, I can think of, which a VA will confront in the up-start stage is discussed in this e-Book. No stone is left unturned.

Opening a virtual assistant business can be 'scary'...not knowing what documents to use, how to market, how to find clients, etc. "Become a Virtual Assistant" is written by a seasoned virtual assistant who is a leader in the industry. Ms. Alipour, a successful entrepreneur-partner herself, operates and leads Virtual Assistant Forums. She knows first hand what VAs NEED to know and has put this knowledge to pen in this fantastic e-Book.

As a VA myself, I only wish I had this reference available when I first opened my business. I can only imagine the many hours, no, the days, I would have saved if this material had been in one place.

Very knowledgeable treatment of a wide variety of catastrophe issues and measurements. But the exposition could be clearer and the mathematics introduced more intuitively. It is a very useful book but takes some work to plow through.

As she shows, the intersection of Christian eschatology with various pagan afterlife imaginings--from the classical paganisms of the Mediterranean to the Germanic, Celtic, Slavic, and Scandinavian paganisms indigenous to northern Europe--brought new cultural values about the dead into the Christian fold as Christianity spread across Europe. Indeed, the Church proved surprisingly open to these influences, absorbing new images of death and afterlife in unpredictable fashion. Over time, however, the persistence of regional cultures and beliefs would be counterbalanced by the effects of an increasingly centralized Church hierarchy. Through it all, one thing remained constant: the deep desire in medieval people to bring together the living and the dead into a single community enduring across the generations.

A well-researched scholarly exploration of the manner in which medieval attitudes toward death, resurrection and day to day interaction among the living and the dead reveal much about the culture and society of the period. Mandeville Caciola takes as her starting point the fact that Death is, of course, a central facet of Life - and proceeds to illuminate the diverse traditions - religious and cultural - that evolved as a means of coping with and understanding a reality that is essentially mysterious and impenetrable. Beautifully written and accessible to both academic and lay audiences.

A rejoinder to a previous review...

As a former employee of Digital Domain, and one of the people who worked with Piers Bizony to develop his book, I find it necessary to respond to the vituperative review posted earlier, entitled, "Digital Campaign - its like 250 pages of add copy!"
That rather misguided review calls into question the author's integrity as a journalist. It's a totally ridiculous notion that Piers Bizony was "used" in some kind of marketing scheme cooked-up to repair Digital Domain's image.
The book was originally conceived and begun in 1996. It was in development for almost five years. Piers was given free reign in developing the form, theme and tone of the book. He maintained editorial control throughout the process. It was never intended as some kind of tawdry expose of the underbelly of the company. Nor was it EVER envisioned as some kind of "revisionist" history of the company. In point of fact, the book has been embraced by many former Digital Domain employees for the book's balance - and for having refrained from becoming a "revisionist" ode.
Based upon his prior interest in visual effects, from working with Stanley Kubrick on his "2001" book, and also his appreciation of Digital Domain's efforts on "Apollo 13," Piers chose to document a portion of the company's work, admittedly its higher profile accomplishments, to give a non-industry, non-technical audience an idea of the processes involved. More than anything, the book is a salute to the hundreds of artists who've worked at Digital Domain.
Although it's blood-sport in Hollywood to savage people and companies who've attained certain status, the reviewer in fact reveals a predisposition which one might imagine is informed by either their own personnel bad experiences at the company or a really naive prejudice against the company.
No one at Digital Domain has ever failed to honestly admire the accomplishments of the standard-bearers of the effect's industry. You will not find greater appreciation for the accomplishments of both ILM and Pixar anywhere else in the industry.
By simplistically citing some of the company's supposed failed efforts, does that call into question Digital Domain's place in the effects industry? I think not. The production problems of two of the cited films are nearly legendary in the industry. They had nothing to do with the film's visual effects. And Digital Domain should not be stigmatized because it was hired to work on poorly conceived projects. Even ILM would be the first to admit they are generally only as good as the projects and scripts they serve.
And the reviewer's notion that somehow the company's best days are behind them is equally ill informed. The book covers work up through the year 2000. Since that time, Digital Domain has produced effects work on many of the highest profile films and highest grossing films. "How The Grinch Stole Christmas" was the HIGHEST grossing film of 2000. At the same time, the company handled a large chunk of "X Men." More recently, the company delivered great work for director Ron Howard's "A Beautiful Mind" - the likely Academy Award winner for Best Picture for 2001. It also delivered great work for "Lord of the Ring" - another likely candidate for Best Picture and likely winner for Best Visual Effects. Currently, Digital Domain recently delivered "Time Machine" - some of the most beautiful imagery in the company's history!
The reviewer drags out some old news, as it pertains to Jim Cameron's departure from the company. Why is that even remotely of interest or of the slightest relevance? Piers did NOT use Mr. Cameron's name more than to state that he was the director of a number of the company's major achievements. This is a book about the artists. And should one question the accomplishments of Digital Domain's artists one would only need look into the ranks of every other effects company in the industry.
If there is a certain patina to the book, it simply reflects the company's desire to work on cool projects. In a de-facto sense, the company has been driven by the directors and studio clients who've brought in challenging projects - director's like Neil Jordan, Ron Howard, Luc Besson, David Ficher, Bryan Singer, the Coen brothers, etc. etc.
As to the reviewer's ludicrous Enron comment, Digital Domain is a privately held company that produces some of the best work in the industry - and has been self-sustaining FOR YEARS!! They make money. They are not subsidized by anyone, or anything other than their own ability to stay in business.
No one should underestimate the difficult nature of visual effects. Just like the industry at large, it's a tough business. But Digital Domain, like every other company in the industry, is essentially held captive by the forces at work that rule the industry. It's also an incredibly challenging and rewarding part of the business - but clearly not for those with thin skin or easily bruised egos.

Good book for Visual Effects Fans, but...

This is a good book for special effects and visual effects fans, especially for those who have seen the movies that are showcased by the author. I have only two gripes. There are some nice pictures that are split in two and should maybe have been printed in a gatefold (the way the excellent ILM books did). Also, many photos are really grainy, and the printing, which is at best mediocre, doesn't really help. If you're a regular reader of Cinefex quarterly, you're going to be disappointed, but overall, a good "coffee table" book.

Nice coffee table book

If you know anything about visual effects this book isn't going to open some secret doors of knowledge.
With that said, this book has some wonderful photos and shot breakdowns. Even knowing "how" they did it it's still nice to enjoy the craftsmanship that's been put into these shots.
If you own The Art of the Matrix, or either of the ILM hardcovers this book would be a nice addition to your collection.
