Best Book for Teaching Project Management

I must say this is one of the best books I have found to teach an introductory course in project management. It is flexible enough to use for both undergraduate and graduate courses, online or face-to-face. The fourth edition follows the latest PMBOK Guide, so it's a great resource for anyone planning to take the PMP exam. (The main difference is the addition of a tenth knowledge area - stakeholder management.) I really like the new Video Highlights feature, the 60-day trial of MindView software for creating mind maps and Gantt charts, and the new fixer upper case study and discounts for simulation software listed in Appendix C. This book goes beyond just preparing students for an exam by including lots of information on"how" to perform various project management tasks. I really like the way a concept is explained and then an example is provided on how to apply that concept. There are several exercises and team projects to help reinforce student learning. There are also many real-world references showing how organizations do things right and wrong in project management, plus xk cd cartoons and the new videos to lighten things up. Yes, there are dozens of introductory project management books on the market, but this one is comprehensive, easy-to-read, includes a great free Web site ([...]) with templates, interactive quizzes, Jeopardy-like games, etc., plus the price is right! Why should we make our students spend over $100 on a dry textbook when they can get this one and actually read it for less money? The appendices with guides to using Project 2010 and At Task (a leading web-based PM software) are excellent. The instructor materials are also outstanding, and the author is very responsive to instructorinputs. I highly recommend this book.

Great Textbook and How To Guide

I have used Kathy's textbooks at Lone Star College since 2008. We have had multiple communications about teaching project management over the years and she asked me to be a reviewer for this latest edition. The text is aligned with the Project Management Institute (PMI) PMBOK Guide, 5th Edition (based on the draft), to be released in December 2012. I was also a reviewer of the PMBOK Guide, 5th Edition draft.

In following the five Process Groups from Initiating through Closing, the text gives students and readers a logical progression through a case study project with examples, great illustrations, and thought-provoking assignments. Appendices provide introductions to MS Project 2010 and AtTask as well as a source of more detailed resources.

Kathy provides a website with supporting information for readers as well as a secure website for instructors.

I highly recommend the book as a college-level text as well as a source of project management training for organizations.

If there was a way to read it like the book

The information is all there, but there are no page numbers to follow class instructions (I had an assignment for class, the instructions was too follow pages and work thru the steps and take a snap shot of what was completed) It is hard to follow without page numbers.

If there was a way to read it like the book, showing a full page at a time.

Don Hutson career spanning speaking, writing, consulting, and sales has brought him many honors. He worked his way through The University of Memphis, graduating with a degree in Sales. After a successful sales career, he established his own training firm and today is CEO of U. S. Learning based in Memphis, TN.

He has spoken to over half of the Fortune 500, is featured in over 100 training films, and currently addresses some 50 audiences per year. He is the author or co-author of thirteen books, including the number one Wall Street Journal and New York Times best-seller, The One Minute Entrepreneur (with Ken Blanchard).

Who doesn’t want to keep their customers ecstatic and out-perform their competitors at the same time? This book promises to show you how to do that and more besides, offering a means to reach out towards that utopian state.

Focussing on your sales proposition and the use of delivering different value to your customers is central to the author’s message. Even the same product may have different value-points to the customer and the key is identifying and utilising these to great effect.

This was an interesting read but the book did feel prone to being easily defocussed and often a little too verbose for its own good. Fortunately it provided an engaging read on a critical subject, so you did want to plough on, despite any transient difficulties.

Do not overly judge your prospect is something the author stresses, noting that many salespeople often negatively and unjustifiably prejudge the quality of a prospect or the outcome of a sales call. The end result is that they invariably shoot themselves in the foot with a weak attitude or negative expectations and this shows itself in the sales call. The author gives a great example and this reviewer has heard of similar tales in his own country: “On a Saturday morning in Indianapolis, two Rolls-Royce salespeople were standing on the showroom floor talking. An old fellow walked in wearing dirty coveralls with a couple of holes in the knees. He walked over and looked at the Rolls Royce in the showroom, and the salesperson who was up to talk to the next customer thought, what a waste of time, so he blew him off. So the other salesperson walked over and welcomed him to the dealership. He was courteous and accommodating to him. He subscribed to the philosophy of never, ever prejudging anybody. You don't prejudge them by how they dress; you don't prejudge them by your initial impression. It worked out for this salesman because Mr. Lilly of Eli Lilly Pharmaceuticals bought two Rolls-Royces that morning. One was for himself and one was for his wife. He then went back home and finished his yard work.” The author concludes correctly that a sales person should never negatively prejudge – if you are going to do any pre-judging, positively prejudge.

No matter how experienced or worldly-wise you might be, this book has the capacity to challenge your thoughts and behaviour. There is no shame in slightly changing or polishing your performance, should you already be operating at “peak efficiency”. The author managed to steer away from meaningless platitudes and the use of gimmicks to push his message. Just like a master salesperson, he focuses and delivers a clear message.

When you read the book you might think the advice being given is so obvious and clear, yet think about some of the recent sales interactions you might have experienced. There is a lot of work to be done and the canny salesperson will be pleased to leapfrog over their less-performing rival.

Simple things indeed: lead with your ears, be a great listener, control your emotions, take notes, probe for additional information and clues, summarise the requirement, tell a story, don’t talk too much and get the customer talking… the list goes on with great advice and, one is ashamed to say, this reviewer sometimes is a little to eager to talk to a prospect to serve them, yet doesn’t always give them too much chance to respond. More work is necessary to remedy this bad habit.

There are far too many books about selling available. This one managed to carve a little space of its own in the mind of this reviewer who sees a lot more business-type books than the average reader! It was enjoyable, memorable and actionable. The hard work, still, falls on the reader though, should they seek to implement the author’s advice.

The Story: Having prevented the ferocious Bloodfiends from bringing disaster to their homeworld of Baal, the Blood Angels go in search of the renegade who almost destroyed them - Fabius Bile. Tracking the Chaos traitor down to his secret base on Dynikas V, a world beset by alien tyranids, the Blood Angels find horrors more terrible than even they can imagine. The Good: Once again we embark on another thrilling adventures of the Blood Angels Chapter of the Adeptus Astartes. The last adventure was in the halls of the Blood Angels Fortress Monastery and now we head out into the blackness of space to take the fight to the Lords of Chaos. Already opportunities for world-building and action packed fight scenes present themselves and we are not disappointed. Rafen is an excellent character in how human he is and in his determination are very compelling. There are many similarities between him and the character of Uriel Ventris from the Ultramarines series by Graham McNeill.

The Adeptus Astartes are undoubtably one of the coolest parts of the Warhammer 40K Universe and we see another aspect of them which was what made the the previous book so enjoyable: Interactions between alternate Space Marine Chapters. The squad of Blood Angels is once again joined by a squad of Space Marines from the Flesh Tearer’s chapter, a successor of the Blood Angels Legion. We also meet other Space Marines who are prisoners of Fabius Bile and being used as fodder for his experiments. One in particular, Tarikus of the Doom Eagles, is an interesting character who gets his own short story later on.

But what really is a great character is Fabius Bile. He is a perfect villain due to the fact that he is so utterly despicable makes him a lot of fun. A rogue apothecary from the Thousand Sons, Traitor Legion, he is known for committing brutal biological experiments across the galaxy with the goal of creating the perfect warrior. A key to making a good villain is either to make him really human or go the opposite direction make him or her a monster that totally lacks sympathy. The latter is what the author does and he does it to great affect.

The Flaws: The main flaw of this book is that it ends on something of a cliff hanger and in order to truly see the story to its very end, one has to purchase or otherwise acquire a copy of the Redeemed e-story from the Black Library website. Not that Bookworm is against ebooks but it can seem like a bit of a money grab to nickel and dime readers so they can see the end of their favorite stories. You should definitely buy a copy of said stories but still…

As Bookworm’s Warhammer Library increases, a flaw within the franchise tends to show up a lot more frequently and that is the homogenization of the antagonists. As stated in another Warhammer 40K review about the Necrons, the forces of chaos can become kind of dull after reading several stories about them. All the forces of Chaos in many books are almost exactly the same, that being: blood, guts, human skin, horned monsters, twisted parodies of life. Very gruesome and indeed an affront to all that is ordered but it never seems to change. Chaos is more than just carnage, it is also confusion and discord. We just need a little more variety in the enemies of mankind, more than just introducing a new one with the new codex. Diversity is what is needed.

While Rafen is a good character, he does come off as a bit of Gary Stu. He is a little too Clark Kent-like at some parts and that can turn off readers looking for more complex protagonists. The same goes for the other characters, such as Turcio and the Flesh Tearers. They are one dimensional and as Bookworm finds while writing this review, not very memorable.

In the end…the main problem with this book was that the other books in the series felt unique whereas this book feels like rather generic.

Final Verdict: A good way to wrap up the Blood Angels series but it is not quite as memorable as the other volumes. Bookworm genuinely hopes that we see more of the Blood Angel Rafen in future adventures of the Imperium of Man.

This is Swallows latest installment in the Blood Angels series. It is a very good book, but to properly enjoy it, you will need to read the books in series before it as it follows a well defined story arc. There were a couple of places that really stretched the bounds of believability. One example is Rafen fighting a titan sized Tyranid 500 feet underwater while mag-locked to a speeding submarine. I also took issue with an Imperial servant referring to the symbol of Chaos Undivided as the "Eight-fold Path". Aside from those two issues the book really takes you on a wild ride that in the end is impossible to put down.

One thing I would like to add is that the events in this book are referenced in Swallows short story "The Returned" in "Legends of the Space Marines"

Good delivery, bad idea

Black Tide continues the Blood Angel plot arc that started with Deus Sanguine. THe Angels, still reeling from the mutant assault that nearly crippled Baal, send out a small force to kill Fabius Bile, and reclaim the genetic material of the primarch that was stolen.

The story, while written in a skein that is entertaining and full of cmobat without becoming overly repititous, suffers greatly under its own mantle. You know prior to page 2 that Bile will not be defeated, and that at best the story will end status quo ante. While the book managed to prop itself up nicely, actually having a plot that could take a twist would've been preferable.

They are, rather, a series of perspectives on the heterogeneity of Derrida's work, or forays into that heterogeneity.The chief goal has been, to borrow a phrase from Wallace Stevens, plainly to propoundwhat Derrida says. The book aims, above all, to render Derrida's writings justice. It should be remembered, however, that, according to Derrida himself, every rendering of justice is also a transformative interpretation. A book like this one is not a substitute for reading Derrida for oneself. It is to be hoped that it will encourage readers to do just that.

This is a tiny book which is full of powerful principles that can totally impact your life and change the course of your life if you read it prayerfully and with an open mind. Brother Hagin shares personal stories and scripture to remind us that God is a loving Father and desires for His people to be abundantly blessed so they can bless others. I have been studying the word of God and the principles that Brother Kenneth Hagin shares are in line with scripture. This book is not just a name it, claim it, get what you can kind of book. It is written from a Pastor's heart who has seen lack and wants to share the wisdom he has learned with all Christians, not so they can become self centered and fat, but so they can have resources to help others in time of need, and pay their bills, and feed their families. Believe me there is no glory in not being able to provide for your own family. I would encourage you to read this book prayerfully and ask the Lord to direct your steps.
