good book to start exploring amphibians

What are amphibians what and why. This is a really nice book. It has great high quality pictures. The first topic that is covered is the definition of amphibian. I like how this book is formatted. The pages that have writing also have a picture of an amphibian. The pictures show a wide variety of amphibians from frogs and lizards to skinks and salamanders. This book does a great job of describing them and differentiates between what is common for most amphibians. It clearly states what they all have in common; like that all are vertebrates and then goes on to give a basic definition of vertebrate. Each time they introduce a new big word or concept it is fully explained in easy to understand language.
This book introduces a concept like how amphibians have adapted to live in many habitats by giving examples of habitats (lakes, streams, ponds and others) then reinforces that concept with pictures. I like asking children questions while reading to make sure they are learning. Since there are so many great pictures I ask the natural question “what kind of habitat do you think this amphibian is living in? I wish the pictures said, so it wasn’t entirely guess work, but it is still a good question and encourages you to talk more in depth about some features of the unique habitats.
I think it is great that this book mentions just how sensitive amphibians are to pollution. I really wish they said just a little more about this. I spent years studying amphibians and their habitats. The mere presence of healthy amphibians is a good indicator that there isn’t pollution, because if there were most amphibians wouldn’t survive.
The book ends with a brief description of what they eat and how long they have been around according to fossil record.
I think this book is age appropriate for first graders. It gives a taste of what amphibians are, and is a great launching pad for discussion and further exploration. I received this e-book for free in exchange for my honest review.

This is a review for What Are Amphibians?, What & Why : 1st Grade Science Series: First Grade Books - Herpetology (Children's Reptile & Amphibian Books)

There is an entire series of these books and every one has amazing photography and just a few words to get a child interested in a category. This book is no different.

The photos of frogs are beautiful. Some of the words are more than a first grader could understand but that also allows for growth and adult interaction, both good things.

I love these books, I wish they were available when my children were small but at now I can enjoy them with my grandchildren.

My little one loves reading this book. The pictures are beautiful, bold and very attractive. The text is to the point and concise and interesting enough to keep my little one's attention until the end. I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for something educational and interesting for a child.

Origins and History of New Thought

This 1963 book provides an invaluable glimpse into the mid-nineteenth century origins, beginning with Phineas P. Quimby, of the New Thought movement in the United States. It describes the careers of the most influential teachers and writers in the various schools and movements, with the exception of the well-known Christian Science church.
It is most successful in uncritically informing the reader of the roots of modern New-Age ideas, most of which were expressed more than a hundred years earlier. It is endlessly surprising to discover how little credit most spiritual leaders give to their ideological forbears and how, because of the lack of any coherent organization, a widespread unawareness of earlier discoveries persists.
Although the author supplies an apparently comprehensive bibliography to the grateful student, the reader wishes that the text delineated more precisely the specific differences in philosophy among the several teachings, for it is those differences that produced the individual schools and distinct spiritual communities.

AN EXTREMELY ILLUMINATING HISTORY OF THE NEW THOUGHT MOVEMENT

Charles Samuel Braden (1878-1970) was a Methodist Episcopal Church missionary and educator, who was Professor of History and Literature of Religions at Northwestern University from 1926 until his retirement in 1954. He wrote a number of books on comparative religions, such as: The World's Religions, a Short History., and These Also Believe,A Study of Modern Amereican Cults in Minority religious movements.

"Spirits in Rebellion" has justifiably been called "the definitive history of New Thought." Braden comprehensively and fairly covers the forerunners of the New Thought movement such as Phineas Parkhurst Quimby (who Braden identifies as "certainly the pioneer in America of the theory of the mental basis of disease") and Warren Felt Evans (whose failure to have founded a movement Braden attributes to the fact that "Evans was clearly not an organization man"), who each have their own chapter, as well as devoting separate chapters to the actual "religions" that emerged from the movement: the Unity School of Christianity, Divine Science, and Religious Science.

He notes that New Thought developed in contrast to the "authoritarian" tendencies in Mary Baker Eddy's Christian Science church, and that Religious Science founder Ernest Holmes "did not expect that his writings would crystallize into hard and fast doctrines ... as in the case of Mrs. Eddy's." Nevertheless, "the line of demarcation between the two (i.e., Christian Science and New Thought) is by no means clear and sharp." Braden chronicles the Unity School founder Charles Fillmore's origins from the New Thought movement, but then his "growing dissatisfaction with the movement ... (which) had ceased to express what he thought to be absolute truth."

The book ends with chapters on "New Thought Leaders," "Leaders Outside the Movement," and several chapters on "New Thought Abroad." Overall, this is an extremely informative, and highly interesting book for anyone interested in New Thought, Christian Science, Religious Science, Divine Science, the Unity School, metaphysical healing, or New Age ideas in general. VERY highly recommended!

The past is prologue

For those of us interested in the New Thought movement, this book is a must. It's size can be overwhelming and yet the detail and careful preservation of the names of those who came before us is amazing. In these days of instant everything, it is helpful to be reminded of those who took time, made the effort, strove ahead through all kinds of challenges, to bring a way of living in the world to our attention. I highly recommend that this book be on your library book shelves, not only for reference purposes but as a living memorial to these inspired and inspiring women and men.
