About the Author
Martin Daly is professor emeritus of psychology, neuroscience and behavior at McMaster University. He has been elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and has received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Human Behavior & Evolution Society.



Margo Wilson (1942-2009) was professor of psychology at McMaster University. She was former editor-in-chief of Evolution and Human Behavior and former president of the Human Behavior and Evolution Society.

Danger: Step-children Are at Greater Risk of Abuse

April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month. One cause of the increasing incidence of child abuse is likely to be the rise in the number of marriages and near-marriages that include step-fathers or step-mothers, as their presence has been shown to produce ten to one-hundred times the frequency of child abuse as occurs in intact families with the two genetic parents.

The massive increase in the risk of child abuse that is associated with step-parenting has been a major theme of the research work done by Professors Martin Daly and the late Margo Wilson, his wife. They expounded on their work in this 1998 book, and defended its genetic / evolutionary arguments at length in a review article [Daly and Wilson, 2008]. They explain the relatively poor treatment of step-children in terms of the often-unconscious tendency to make choices that increase the likelihood of the perpetuation of our genetic heritage. Other explanations they show to be less compelling.

A slender book, fairly expensive, still well worth reading, THE TRUTH ABOUT CINDERELLA awakens the reader to the problems of re-marriage, step-parenting, and being a step-child.

My opinion: Awareness of the problem can help those involved in step-families. The solution requires a greater reluctance to set up a blended family and improved behavior if in one.

solid evidence for an intuitive theory

This study is a thorough inquiry into the natural biases a step-parent may have towards step-children, as illustrated in the tale of Cinderella (and countless other stories). The authors offer an evolutionary explanation for this (why would we want to invest our parental effort into someone else's progeny) as well as extensive empirical evidence (statistics on child abuse from several agencies around the globe). I'm surprised that I haven't seen this information pitched about by the media (it would make a compelling local news piece, along the same lines as "heat wave 2000", "is your terrier a terror in waiting?" or "How deadly are the bacteria under your fingernails?".) Except that this material is a bit more serious and scholarly. Its a quick read and well worth the effort, especially if you are a step-parent (or have one, or married to one).

Thought-provoking

Before reading this book, I was already familiar with Daly and Wilson's work from Wright's Moral Animal, Pinker's How the Mind Works, and others, so frankly, this book did not contain a lot of new ideas for me. By no means do I intimate that The Truth About Cinderella is not worth reading. Definitely, definitely, read this carefully, especially if you harbor any doubts about the validity of their findings, as they very neatly refute critics.
The authors provide an ingenious explanation for the prevalence of evil step-mothers in fairy tales: Mama's telling the bedtime stories. Much as I admire this explanation, I wonder if there isn't more to it than that. Let us leave fairy tales aside, and look at history, which abounds with stories such as that of Duke Wen of Chin/Jin (7th c. BC). As a prince, he was forced to flee for his life after his brother, the crown prince, had been coerced into suicide by his father, at his step-mother's connivance. You can probably provide similar stories. Now, please tell me a story about the mother who puts her own child to death at the step-father's insistence.... Does this reflect a sexist bias in historical records? Perhaps Daly and Wilson have tacity answered this question in another context: "the payoff coming in the form of an increased chance to sire the mother's next baby." Kids are easy (and fun) to come by once you've got a woman, so maybe earlier kids can be sacrificed to keep the woman (who may have cost a pretty penny) compliant.
To their discussion of why step-families do generally work out after all (I call attention to the ubiquity of infanticide, as shown by Marvin Harris in Cannibals and Kings), I wish to add my speculation. Due to our big brain, human birth has always been a dangerous event for women. I suspect step-families were far more common in the paleolithic than now. Men outlived women ¡Xprobably outlived several wives. We know from the archaeological record that old people, unable to fend for themselves, were taken care of ¡Xobviously, by the young and healthy. What I suggest, without a shred of hard evidence, is that young men who looked after old men were aware that one day they might find themselves dependent on the younger generation. It made sense for them to tolerate step-children as well as their own gene-bearing children, because some old-age insurance is better than none at all.
Finally, I would like to add that Weidenfeld & Nicolson's Darwinism Today series is thought-provoking, pleasingly designed, and well-printed, just the thing to stuff into your pocket to take somewhere to read and ponder.

I'm sorry, I reviewed the study guide info on my review for the journal. The journal was FINE, but the study guide was a waste without the dvd, which you did not offer. Very disappointed with the way this was offered as a 3 pak, but no dvd.

Good Food IS Good Medicine for your body

I just completed the first 40 days of the Daniel Plan and I must
say...I did not drop a lot of weight...only about 10 lbs...but I will
say that weight loss was NOT my primary reason for going on this
Plant Based Style of Eating. I wanted to break my sugar cravings,
and learn to look at food differently and I have done both.

I now ask myself...before I put anything in my Mouth...Is this Indeed
good food (which is good medicine) for my body? And if it isn't then
I don't eat it. If it was grown on or as a plant it is good food but if it
came out of a manufacturing plant it is not.

Do I ever have a piece of birthday cake or a cup of Starbucks coffee or
a piece of Chocolate...ABSOLUTELY. This program is NOT a DIET it
is a way of life and they highly recommend that you eat great food 90%
of the time...which allows you 10% of the time to have those occasional
indulgences. No Binges Please! LOL

Yesterday, I got back my yearly blood panel results and all my numbers
were in good if not great range except for two. #1 My Cholesterol was too low
(what? you've got to me kidding?) #2 I still had a slight elevation in my Triglycerides.
But my Diabetic Panel was 5.8 (totally under control by food alone) no shots, no
medicine. My kidney and liver functions were great and no proteins were passing
into the blood stream.

See...healthy eating makes for healthy people!! I am 62 years old and want to live
as long as I possibly can because I have 3 beautiful grand-children to help raise and
I don't want to miss out on a second of it.

You too, I am sure have your own reasons to want to live a long life. Don't compromise
your health or your time on this Earth to accomplish your goals. LIFE IS TOO SHORT
AS IS.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THE DANIEL PLAN,

Great Series of Tull Sheet Music!

Both of these new Tull Sheet Music books are great, and although they may not be as complete or comprehensive as you may think, it is certianly a great aid for learning some of the most popular Tull songs. The (Electric Tull) Book is larger (101 pages) than the Acoustic one, and both include great songs. This one includes Tabs/chords, etc. for Aqualung, Bungle in the Jungle, Locomotive Breath, Minstrel in the Gallery, and Teacher, among many others! Well worth the money!

I won't be long, i've actually never heard the album, but i know it's great, i know all the songs. It's a good idea to put the electric and acoustic ones on separate cd-s, i hope i'll get some money soon to buy it.

This is a great companion to Gurdjieff's works, good for those just starting or well acquainted with his writings. Ms. Wellbeloved demystifies several subjects, not just to make it easier for us, but to prompt more questions from us.

Key Book of Key Conepts

This work is a remarkable condensation, written with great clarity and comprehension, of the words and terms that appear in the writings by and about G.I. Gurdjieff. The entries devoted to Astrology, Enneagram, and Zodiac are particularly insightful and valuable. But those that explain meanings behind everyday words like Fear, Music, Time, etc., are worth reading and considering--not to mention such obscure and work-specific neologisms as Hasnamuss, Legomonism, and Solioonensius. In all, there are 300 explanatory entries arranged alphabetically. Paul Beekman Taylor contributes a fine Foreword, and Sophia Wellbeloved has added a 12-page bibliography, a 4-page index, and biographical entries on 30 or so of Gurdjieff's pupils, both major and minor. "Gurdjieff: The Key Concepts" is a key book.

Fantastic!

I used this book mainly to study to study for my second year of medical school and to prep for the USMLE Step 1. This book doesn't have every nitty gritty detail that might be on exams or the boards, but I found it was good for a few things:

1) The graphical layout was really fantastic to look at before starting a new section of pharmacology to orient myself to all the drug groups and their relations. Sometimes I would put notes from the syllabus/lectures into the book for stuff the prof stressed that wasn't in the book. It was also good to gain some handy mnemonics.

2) It was good to hit up the book close to comprehensive exams and the Step 1 to refresh my memory about drugs I hadn't studied in a while.

The MAJOR advantage this had over other books like Katzung or Goodman & Gilman was its CONCISE and has pictures. I found it impossible to memorize from pages written text. It's kind of like "Clinical Microbiology Made Ridiculously Simple" except the graphics in this book are much nicer/in color.

Excellent Pharmacology Review Book

I think this book was great for reviewing pharm for USMLE step 1.

Pros:
-The images and the layout of the pages made digesting the information very easy!
-good mnemonics
-concise

Cons:
-I wouldn't recommend it for the nitty-gritty of drugs. I would go to more dense books (e.g. katzung or goodman & gilman). But I don't hold this against the book in my rating, since it is meant to be a review book.

Pretty good resource, with some deficiencies

Although the book has a pretty good concept, some important topics are missing altogether: namely, antivirals, and anti-HIV medications, and resins-type medications are also missing (toxicology / antidotes info is there but is limited). Hopefully, these topics will be added in newer editions. The quality of paper, tables and illustrations is excellent. Canadian and American trade names for medications are included

Just in response to a previous reviewer- As a domestic violence education professional, I assure you that all reputable sources on domestic violence agree that women make up the overwhelming majority of victims of DV (these statistics vary from the 80s to the high 90s in terms of percentages).

the difference between violence and abuse

There is a crucial differences between male and female domestic violence. If a man isn't afraid of a woman's violence, it's not abuse. Fear is a defining factor.

Abuse is systematically controlling another person through intimidation and control in a sadly self-defeating attempt to get needs met. An abuser believe violence is justified in achieving this. Non-abusers may flip out sometimes, but they genuinely believe that violence is only justified in self-defense, and only in enough measure to protect ourselves or others.

Ironically, when a woman is continually abused, she become nervous, volatile, exhausted, and may even respond with verbal abuse and, rarely, physical violence (rarely because the male is usually more powerful.) Think: cornered animal.

When a man begins to change or behaves less violently, the deep anger women have been feeling but suppressing out of fear may finally come out, and not always in the nicest way. However, this is categorically different from abuse: punishing, strategic, intentional violence.

Sadly, men who are violent will use any excuse to defend their behavior. Hence, accusing their female targets of being abusers. That might be where the court statistics listed below come from (if they are even accurate). Ironically, many women don't prosecute their male abusers out of a misguided hope of helping them through nurture and communication instead. (In fact, it appears that real painful consequences are much more likely to motivate an abuser to change.)

Women aren't "better" than men for being statistically much less likely to be abusers. They simply don't have that option due to the reality of the comparable strength of their bodies and society's conditioning.

Think about this: How many women buy a gun and routinely wave it around to intimidate their husband to control his behavior? It seems absurd, doesn't it? What might the man do in response? Run away? Try to overpower her anyway? Yet men easily intimidate women in this way without that gun, simply because they are physically (and often financially) stronger.

Ironically, women who actually are abusive are said to be the hardest to rehabilitate. This is because a woman who goes against all of society's training to use brute force to try to get her needs met is usually severely mentally ill.

So... To the man who feels a need to bring up women's abuse in a review of a book designed to help men stop abusing and help women escape their abuse... What need does this fulfill in you? Why not stop denying and blaming others for your behavior and get help? Or recommend a good book that specifically targets helping women abusers to change and their male targets to free themselves from women's abuse? After all, isn't the purpose of these books to help both men and women...and their children?

I have reviewed hundreds of technical books over the years for our magazine. Each gets a letter "grade" of either A, B, C, D, or F. Very few ever get an "A"but Gary Conner's book does and it is well deserved. It is entertaining, believable and loaded with graphics -- an easy, enjoyable and educational read.

Now, small manufacturers can reap the profits of Lean

For decades, large manufacturing operations have benefited from Lean Manufacturing principles. Many small, job-shop-type manufacturers try and fail to implement the Lean approach because Lean Manufacturing principles were developed for the large manufacturing environment.
Gary Conner has successfully adapted Lean principles to fit the job shop environment and presents them in an enjoyable story that allows the reader to witness the power of Lean. He makes Lean Manufacturing principles understandable, clearly demonstrating how job shops can implement them successfully. I highly recommend this book to small shops wishing to reap the profits of Lean.

Another DISTRACTION in the Pursuit of Understanding LEAN

I am astonished that this publication would be recognized by the Shingo Prize Committee. I was originally optimistic about the contents based on the title. FOOLED AGAIN! The book is simply a collection of QUALITY based analysis and improvement tools, a few "war stories" and a very general discussion of LEAN tools and systems. I have been a Lean Practitioner for over twenty years and have had the privilege of learning from some of the original teachers of Lean in the United States. "Lean for the Small Shop" is another of the flurry of textbooks recently published that offer very little in the way of useful information about how to successfully design and build a lean production system. Small shops really do need a simple and useful guide for understanding and implementing a lean system. "Lean for the Small Shop" is NOT that guide. If you are the "Lean Champion" in your company, read "Lean Production Simplified" by Pascal Dennis (the BEST introductory text that exists today). Do look at some of the series by Shigeo Shingo or Taiichi Ohno for your first "baby steps". Beyond that, find a real lean "sensei".

Beyond that, find a real lean "sensei". AVOID using a consultant just because he is near your location. There are still only a handful (literally) of Lean practitioners who really kow what they are doing here in America. Also don't be fooled by those universities who have put their otherwise good name on a group of people (Lean charlatans) who really can offer you nothing of value except a great looking "certificate".

I don't remember what was causing the tension to swirl through our house like the winds of autumn, sending emotional debris spinning through the air with such intensity that it seemed to smack up against me. What I do remember was what I felt like: confused and unsafe, as if the stories I could sense on the outside somehow got inside of me. I was helplessly floating in the chaos that surrounded and penetrated me. I was only four years old, but I remember the experience vividly.

I had to have relief. Make it stop! I had to close myself off, ground myself in my body, in Colette.

I knew just what to do. I picked up a cooking spoon that had sticky raw cake dough on it, and as soon as I put it in my mouth, I felt calm. Now, that feeling didn't last, but it was very powerful. I had already discovered the connection between food and self-soothing. The fear melted away as the gooey, sweet mess on that spoon dissolved in my mouth and slid down my throat. I was "home," in a safe place where that icky feeling of something being very wrong couldn't get inside me again. That sense of physicality as the cake dough entered my body gave me a sense of substance. It made me feel whole, and secure.

It would be years before I understood this experience or its significance, but when I finally did, everything changed. I realized that the missing piece in the puzzle of my baffling relationship to food, eating, and weight was empathy. I was a person who felt too much, and I was using food to detour away from the awful feeling of not knowing where I ended and others began.

Food sealed my porous boundaries where other people's energy invaded me, and it allowed me to feel present in myself. I needed that quiet and calm, but I had to find a better way to achieve it. This revelation ended an exhausting war with food and my weight and began a new chapter for me. While I'm not a size 2, and I can't claim to have the figure of a 20-year-old high-fashion model, most of the time I'm at peace with my body and myself. That alone is an incredible feat, given how much I have struggled with all of this over the years.

It was this missing piece of feeling too much that allowed me to stop beating myself up (which, as it turns out, is counterproductive when trying to lose weight, as you'll learn later in this book). Once I did that, I started to better understand the many influences on those formerly dysfunctional relationships between myself, food, and my body. I was able to address those influences, too--but it all began with understanding why I was feeling too much and why fear and frustration were making me fat.

Porous Boundaries

A person who feels too much often senses the need to eat because her experience of the world is too much for her. It's not that she simply loves the taste, texture, smell, and sight of food, which provides a sensory experience. It's not that she's experiencing hunger pangs, or even that she's addicted to food, although that may be. Diets don't work for her because they don't address her powerful need to feel grounded in herself,separated from the confusing, distressing emotional turbulence around her. Food serves that purpose.

The stress of remaining in the moment, without knowing what you are sensing and how to be separate from it, is deeply discombobulating for someone who feels too much. The pain and discomfort are intolerable, and you will do anything to escape.

If you're highly sensitive and empathetic, that has a profound influence on your weight, as well as your thought processes and your moods, which affect your eating habits and your relationships with others. I'm sure you know all about emotional eating, but you've probably never considered what empathetic eating is, too. There is a subtle yet profound difference between the two. An example of emotional eating would be feeling so uncomfortable after a conflict with a coworker that you reach for the stash of mini candy bars you keep in your desk drawer to calm your anger and embarrassment.

However, let's say that it's not you who was in conflict with someone at work but two people in another department. You walk into the meeting room where they just had a heated argument and you feel the tension in the air. You're unsettled and uncomfortable and have no clue why. As other coworkers file into the meeting room, you have a compelling urge to sneak back to your office and grab some candy bars. You start feeling defensive and on alert, and you can't understand why. All you know is that you want those mini chocolates right now. That's empathetic eating.

Emotional eating and empathetic eating often occur at the same time. Let's say you're about to leave for work and you're feeling particularly vulnerable because you woke up, weighed yourself, and were embarrassed and ashamed by the number on the scale. You drive to work and feel frustrated, anxious, and angry that other cars aren't allowing you to merge. Then you walk into the meeting room where tension hangs in the air and you suddenly realize there's a ball of confusing emotions rolling around inside you and you have no idea how to sort it out. Visions of doughnuts dance in your head. Your emotions are difficult enough to deal with, but now you've taken on the emotions of others and added them to the mix. You've done this because you're highly sensitive and empathetic, and other people's emotions flood into you through your porous boundaries.

You probably don't realize when you're taking on someone else's emotions that you're experiencing feelings that aren't yours. Thoughts don't enter your mind when you're deeply upset and feeling ungrounded. You just feel discombobulated, or upset. You can't put your finger on what you're really feeling. You don't say, "Hey there, self. Bob's anger has entered you and you're tuned in to him!" All you know is that you have to have that salty, sugary, fatty treat now.

I know what this is like because I have felt this way with disturbing regularity: filled with confusing emotions that were upsetting me. I didn't recognize that many of those feelings weren't even mine. Why did it take me so long to figure this out? Why don't diet books or courses teach us about how taking on other people's "stuff" affects us? In our culture, we don't talk much about empathy, so when you're sitting there feeling guilty for downing a huge portion of junk food, you're not likely to think about this whole "empathy" and "sensitivity" thing. But ah, if you did, what you would learn!

What It's Like to Be Deeply Empathetic

Empathy is much underrated. From childhood, we learn that brute strength, toughness, and smarts are what we need to succeed and be happy in life. We rarely celebrate sensitivity, or the beauty of caring deeply. Too often, sensitivity is seen as a weakness, something to be ashamed of (and more so for men than for women, which is why sensitive men have it especially rough).

But being empathetic--feeling others' emotions as your own--can give you a deeper understanding of others and greater compassion. If you're highly sensitive and empathetic, your friends probably would say you're the one person they can always count on to know they're sad when they're pretending everything is okay. You can probably sense feelings others don't pick up on. That sensitivity enables you to "read" situations very well and respond accordingly. Your actions and decisions take into account the hidden reality of people's emotions. You might find that people seem instinctively drawn to you, and random strangers may even tell you their troubles. I have a friend who is hopeless at directions, but whenever she's in New York, strangers push their way through crowds to ask her to point them to Broadway. She just gives off an approachable and kind energy-and then she has to admit that she has no idea whether she and the stranger are facing north, south, east, or west.

Incomparable Resource for Breaking the Emotional Eating Cycle

Truly one of the most influential books on emotional eating that I have read. Filled with writing exercises, meditations, and simple ways to increase mindfulness, this resource was the first step in my journey toward regaining control over my eating and regaining control over my health. It allowed me to take my awareness deeper toward understanding the root of my emotional eating, and provided me with lifelong tools that I continue to use almost a year later. I'm so thankful to have found this incredible book and continuously recommend it to family and friends who are seeking to break free from their dependence on food. Highly, highly recommended!

The Best Weight Loss Book Ever

For those of you who have read my other reviews, I have been harsh (and deservedly so) on other weight loss books. But this one is so good I now own the Kindle Edition and the Audiobook. Colette Baron-Reid explains that she is a member of a variety of 12-step programs, and is able to capture her wisdom in a relatable, comforting and simplified manner. Her program for weight loss is very comprehensive and combines emotional, physical, spiritual and metaphysical elements into a way of life that is practical and effective. Yet she never tries to force any of her beliefs on anyone, instead telling the audience what she has learned and what works for her. However, this is not just a book to be read, but a program that requires action and work on your part. You will get as much out of it as how much you put into it.

A "Must Have" for Understanding the Emotional Connection

If you are a fan of Colette Baron-Reid, you will probably enjoy this book even if you don't have weight issues. If you are not familiar with her, she is a gifted intuitive counselor (she does not like the term medium) who has appeared on Dr. Phil and written other books on intuition. I am probably a bit biased, having attended her live workshops. I was expecting this to be good because I enjoyed The Map and Remembering the Future: The Path to Recovering Intuition.

Her knowledge of this subject is first hand, having gained 70 pounds in 3 months when her mother died. I could relate to her experience, having done the same thing when my son died. Over the years she tried everything from dieting to overeaters anonymous, but it was only when she linked clairsentience, or "feeling too much" with food and weight that she was able to drop the extra pounds, stop dieting, and find peace with this.

So, what exactly does it mean to "feel too much"? Some people are very empathic, and they tend to pick up the feelings of others around them. When the other people are carrying negative feelings, you can pick up the negative energy and become emotionally (and physically) overloaded. I think everyone has experienced how a negative person can bring you down.

The book is based on her highly successful program that she has conducted live and online. The book, like her program is very interactive with questionnaires, visualizations, and suggestions for understanding your emotions. There are also techniques like EFT and journaling, with personal stories and examples of clients she has helped. The writing style is an interesting mix of all of these together, which keeps it from seeming like a work book and makes it more personal.

At first glance, this may seem a bit far out for some people. It is really much more conventional than I had expected, with sound advice on eating and managing your feelings. If you are open to new ideas and exploring your emotions, I highly recommend getting this book. It is much more than eating, it is also about happiness.
