About the Author
Irina Ionesco was born to Romanian parents in Paris, 1935. At the age of four she was separated from them and spent her formative years in the city of Constanza, Romania. Steeped in that city's fabulous riches and fascinating traditions, she returned to Paris first to dance, then to paint, and finally to find her true vocation as photographer of the bizarre and beautiful as they are evoked in women's erotic mysteries. Ionesco was elected "Woman of the Year", Time Life Books, 1977, and has over 12 books and countless international exhibitions to her credit. Irina Ionesco currently lives and works in Paris.

beautiful and disturbing

This is an amazing body of work, and one might think it was done in the 1920's as the style is sort of the flapper mode. Irina chronicles her daughter as she grows from a young child to a young women. It is disturbing as one cannot look at the pictures of Eva as a young child and not think of the tragedy of Jon Benet. Eva as a little child is made up as a siren with a combination of innocence and provocation. That combination is what makes this such a compelling body of work, but also perhaps disturbing. More than one photo seemed to have some white specks, either from dust on the negative or a problem in printing. The composition and settings show a fine eye for photography and this is a wonderful collection. There is a lushness to the settings and a great variety. In the shots where Eva is looking directly at the camera, she appears to be looking right through the viewer. One will not forget these great shots.

A beautiful piece of history

These are some beautiful photos of a very adored little girl.

The printing job on this book is impeccable and definitely

worth adding to the library. If you are interested in photography

at all there are some very nice examples of child photography

in here. If you want to see photos of a child that is loved to the

point of being idolized you will find that in here as well.

My only complaint is that there were tons of color photos taken

of Eva and this book is only black-and-white.

Bought this book when my son was 4 and we were living in Algeria. Literally taught him to read from it. Lost track of the book through the years. Now his son is 4 and I wanted to give him a copy. Found it on Amazon, and now my son is teaching his son to read from it. I'd recommend this book to any parent who wants to give their child a little head start.

Olin Distinguished Lecture, from which this slender volume is derived, I became only the second scholar from the rigorous discipline of etiquette to address that otherwise distinguished center of learning. My mission [in this book] is to call attention to the need for a philosophically acceptable and aesthetically pleasing standard of American etiquette. In my humble way, I only wish to finish the task at which our Founding Fathers failed. It is my hope that this small treatise will cure the historic ills of American society. If not, it has at least already enabled me to endow, at Harvard, the Miss Manners Champagne Fund for Parched Political Philosophers so that my successors at the lectern are immediately refreshed for their efforts. Miss Manners has long held the belief that champagne is a major civilizing influence, not to mention an invaluable tool in softening up those who resist acknowledging the importance of etiquette as an academic discipline.

A small jewell by a jewell of a weiter

Why does this nation suffer from an epidemic of rudeness? How can we keep our professional lives from destroying our private lives? How can good manners be squared with the ideals of American life? The Kennedy School of Government at Harvard invited Judith Martin (i.e., Miss Manners) to come and deliver its John M. Olin Distinguished Lecture on these questions, and she responded with this marvelous little book, filled with the sort of good sense (and good humor) that always makes her work eminently readable. The only other scholar ever invited to talk at Harvard on the question of deportment, by the way, was Cotton Mather -- eminent company indeed!
If you think Miss Manners is only interested in which fork to use with the fish course, you obviously haven't been keeping up. She's actually a very skilled practical anthropologist and sociologist, with a lively interest in what sets our theoretically classless American culture apart from the rest of the world. And she has maintained for years that "proper" -- which is to say "common sense" -- etiquette is the very linchpin of a democratic, egalitarian society. A nicely written and very thought-provoking book.

Perfecting American Civilization

Judith Sylvia Perlman was born in 1938 and spent part of her childhood in foreign capitals due to her father's work as a United Nations economist. She then worked at The Washington Post for 25 years, covering social events at the White House. Later she became a theater and drama critic. In 1978, she created the Miss Manners column.

This tiny book is a compilation of ideas from a lecture given at Harvard University. Judith Martin approached her field work in a different way from most social scientists. Instead of studying a segment of society for a limited period of time, she simply invited everyone in the country to write to her so she could analyze the problems and provide helpful solutions to perplexing questions about etiquette.

"The state of American etiquette is, however, now worse than ever. Miss Manners is forced to act. I shall attempt to show what went wrong, and to propose a modest solution."

Judith Martin then continues with humor, which I happily laughed along with (out loud) right through this book. I had no idea she was such a comedian.

She explains how America is a place where you do your own thing and guides us into the area of manners vs. morals. She can't believe how anyone would not be able to figure out which fork to use if she could go from using quill pen to using a personal computer in three days.

This book will make you think about how you speak to people when going to a party. I know for a fact, there are many people who don't like being asked: "What do you do?" As if that is more important than "who you are." Perhaps we should go up to people and say: "What is your dream? Who do you want to become?" I myself am more my hobbies than what I do to make money.

I grew up in a country where children were seen and not heard, where everyone seemed to mind their manners, but in America, I often feel very confused about what people expect, because often when I'm very polite, they become offended by my sense of trying to be nice. As if it is not real. Manners online is another story altogether. At forums, it often seems to be survival of the fittest, which is why I went back to my silent life of reviewing.

This tiny book has a huge helping of humor! Once you read this book, you will more than likely want to read Judith's "Guide to Rearing Perfect Children," "Guide to Excruciatingly Correct Behavior" and "The Name on the White House Floor."

Short treatise on the history of democratic etiquette

The text of the book is a transcribed speech which Judith Martin gave to students at a certain Ivy League institution. It covers a short history of official American manners, such as when President Thomas Jefferson tried to apply his democratic ideals by calling all foreign envoys "Mr. Stuart" and the like, as opposed to using titles in official protocol. This idea did not last.
However, there really isn't that much substance in this book that has not been covered in one of Ms. Martin's many other books. Her main idea is that, as a democratic society, social manners should not depend on money or rank, but egalitarianism, where the fair way to decide precedence is by age -- simply for the reason that everyone eventually gets their chance to take precedence, should they live long enough. Still, reading this prompted me to write Ms. Martin to ask her to write a more complete book on the history of American etiquette. I still await that book.
I would recommend buying a different book by Ms. Martin; the wait I had to get this book wasn't worth it.

About the Author

Mark Evan Bonds is the Cory C. Boshamer Distinguished Professor of Music at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he has taught since 1992. He holds degrees from Duke University (BA), Christian-Albrechts-Universität Kiel (MA), and Harvard University (PhD). His publications include Wordless Rhetoric: Musical Form and the Metaphor of the Oration (1991), After Beethoven: Imperatives of Symphonic Originality (1996), and Music asThought: Listeningto the Symphony in the Age of Beethoven (2006). He has also published essays on the music of Haydn and Mozart and has served as editor-in-chief of Beethoven Forum.

Worth the money!

I bought this book new for my music history class last year. Sure, as the complete package of CDs, anthologies, and this textbook can add up to be really expensive, I am just talking about the textbook as it stands alone.

For starters, this is the first textbook that I have ever read all the way through (sticky tabs line the edge of it!), and that is quite an impressive accomplishment for an undergraduate student. I believe that the textbook is not only well researched, but also very well-written. I was actually captivated in my reading, which also leads to explaining why I've finished this book and not any others. The format and outlines of the sections and chapters are well-conceived and there is a lot of extra information that is relevant to the topics discussed in each chapter. I especially like the composer biographies that intercede shortly after he or she is mentioned for the first time. In this way, it helped me gain more of an expansive knowledge of the composer: how he or she lived, his or her notable achievements, other pieces written by the composer and for what type of instruments/ensembles...instead of only being able to associate the one listening example associated with the composer, and pretending I know everything about a composer because of that. There are plenty of pictures and illustrations to go with, and most of them are beneficial to the reading. I also liked that Bonds would link world history to music history (as music, especially in more modern times, has always been greatly influenced by history).

Sub-par teacher or excellent teacher? Whatever you've got, you can learn a lot from this book alone! The combined edition in hardcover is a plus and that's already how it is published! Enjoy!

I've actually enjoyed reading this text. Some nice side stories to go along with the times and composers. Granted I like history and I like music... So it's hard not to like it. I give it a 4 star rating because I hate paying for college textbooks. I always feel ripped off and ashamed afterwards...

This book was required for a class. It's well written and interesting. Must be used with accompanying CD's and annotated scores (sold separately) for best use. I was very surprised to have ordered a paperback version but received a hardback copy!

Ordained Baptist minister and DePaul University professor Dyson (Between God and Gangsta Rap, LJ 1/96) here analyzes the life of rapper/actor Tupac Amaru Shakur (1971-96) as a microcosm of black American life and culture. Placing gangsta rap in social and historical context, he thoroughly and thoughtfully considers its key elements as evidenced by Shakur's music and videos, exploring issues like machismo, the simultaneous contempt for and adoration of black women, and black-on-black violence. (Shakur himself was shot to death in a still-unsolved murder.) Dyson discusses these sensitive, controversial subjects with such noted cultural analysts as Khephra Burns and Stanley Crouch, creditably balancing the opinions of rap's supporters, rap's critics, and rappers themselves. Though marred by a few minor errors, this well-written, intelligent, and energetically investigative work will make a valuable addition to academic libraries. The extremely high level of writing renders it unsuitable for fan-oriented biography collections, for which Tupac Amaru Shakur, 1971-1996 (Three Rivers, 1998) is more appropriate. Ever since the rapper Tupac Shakur was shot to death, in 1996, he not only has been kept in the public eye by numerous posthumous releases but has become, for many young African-Americans, a full-fledged martyr. Dyson's book, a mixture of biography and polemic, examines Tupac both culturally and spiritually through a loosely organized series of meditations that begin in Tupac's childhood (his mother, Afeni, was a Black Panther who later fought a vicious addiction to crack cocaine) and move through his manhood (as a young student, Tupac read voraciously, from Aldous Huxley to Teilhard de Chardin). Occasionally, Dyson's claims for Tupac are a bit grand, but his eclectic reportage—he interviews a wide range of people, some famous, some not—paints a nuanced picture of his subject while illuminating the effect hip-hop has had on America.

Excellent scholarship, but the writing leaves something to be desired

This is an excellent book. As other reviewers have noted, this is not exactly a biography. Rather, Dyson uses Tupac's life as a prism through which to examine black culture, racism, and society as a whole. He does this very effectively, and the arguments that he pursues are nuanced and broadly convincing.

As a result, I would strongly recommend this book to someone who does not love rap music. Regardless how you feel about the music, it cannot be reasonably denied, as this book makes clear, that Tupac's was an incredibly important figure in this era of history, and that he brightly reflected a society that contributed quite a bit to who he became, for better and worse. Anyone who is interested in race politics and how they impact America should read this book. And in my opinion, anyone who is not interested in that, should be.

With that said, I personally did not find the writing style very good. The prose is very ornate, overwhelmingly so at times, and sometimes excellent points are partially obscured behind too many words. Many of the best points in this book could have been made much more clearly in that respect. at a slightly higher level, sections of this book seem to meander a bit. This has, I think, something to do with the dual nature of the book, as both biography and sociological treatise. There are times when it vacillates between the two a little confusingly, or can't decide which role it is in for a few pages. But overall, the excellent arguments and sociological exploration of the book do get delivered, and they are easily worth the distractions.

What can I say, it opened my eyes to ...

What can I say, it opened my eyes to a lot of things in the history of Hip hop and how it is so related to the triumphs and miseries of that time. But its more about the tale a man born in the tornado and never able to leave it. Truly a Genius's story told as only at the artfully scholarly Micheal Eric Dyson can tell. A must read.

The unknown world of Tupac

What he discovers is the underpinning world of the black man in today's fast pace society.
This book ,Holler if You Hear Me: Searching for Tupac Shakur is more than a biography on Tupac it explores the legacy of his work, the women in his life, the folio of his music, the lyrics of this gangster with a thug life.
Tupac is also the only black that has become a cultural icon in the same mode of Marilyn Monroe and James Dean, we will always have a young memory of him.
Delving into the style that makes Dyson's work so engaging he mixes his scholarly, preacher, and man from the hood lens to explore the depth of this man that was lost way to young.
